Adenomyosis and IVF

Hi ladies

I am waiting to see if my NHS referral for IVF will be accepted - in the mean time, I had a private scan which showed I have Adenomyosis (on a 3D scan)

has anyone has experience with this condition and will it effect my chances of a successful IVF?- I’ve read it can decrease your chances

if so - did you have to have more tests before you started IVF, or take a certain treatment path ?

Hi,
I have suspected adenomyosis. While there is no proper treatment, the adenomyosis protocol for my recent FET, which has failed but that's another story, was: 6-8 weeks of medically induced menopause then a medicated transfer with progynova, progesterone pessaries and shots, aspirin and clexane.

After six weeks of treatment there was an improvement in the way the uterus looked. No inflamation was detected and the lining reached a very nice thickness prior to transfer, something that failed to happened in previous FETs. The transfer ended in a chemical pregnancy probably due to the embryo being abnormal - it was an untested embryo. All other factors were perfect: lining, uterus, hormone levels etc.

There is a lot of info online about the protocol - Lupron protocol for adenomyosis. I used a different medication, but the same impact.

Good luck!

Hi there - not sure how much help I can be but just interested to hear your experiences with adenomyosis; did you have symptoms before your diagnosis? I ask as I had an ultrasound scan a few weeks ago with a different doctor and she mentioned that I had a ‘jagged’ shape to my uterus lining which she said suggested mild adenomyosis (something previous scans have never suggested). Anyway I don’t have any symptoms / painful periods except for spotting pre-af. The doctor said that it wasn’t an issue and wouldn’t stop me conceiving (maybe because it is so mild?) but that seems to be very different from everything I have read online and so feeling quite confused about it all.

@hopingforapeainapod
My symptoms are: pain during menstruation/ovulation/sex/ working out or running. My periods have been light for years but that's due to thin lining. I have had scans with two different doctors and they both have agreed on the diagnostic. Some months is visible, some months it isn't. Apparently this is quite common.
During the medically induced menopause the pain was gone. I had no cramps during sex/running so I am pretty sure the inflamation was cleared, which was also confirmed by ultrasounds before embryo transfer.
Some women can conceive with adenomyosis, some struggle. I am from the latter category, I have been trying unsuccessfully for 5 years.

@Mistymist I’m so sorry to hear you have had such a rubbish time of it, that all sounds pretty awful. I can’t believe I’d never even heard of it until the doctor mentioned it a few weeks ago. I’ve been ttc baby number 1 for 14 months now and never been pregnant - everything else is normal (bloods, semen analysis, Hycosy, am having regular periods and confirmed ovulation etc etc) so am wondering if this could be the reason, but I’m not sure if I am just grasping for an explanation. There does seem to be v conflicting information online, with some saying it shouldn’t impact fertility and others saying it causes all sorts of problems. I hope you have more luck soon!

Hi ladies - can I join please. 🙏🏼 I’m about to start my stims tomorrow, first injection and I’m very nervous. I have had 2 surgeries to remove endometriosis, my fallopian tubes have been removed due to infection and scarring and my AMH is low. I’m 41 years old and my clinic has given me a 25% chance of success. I too have been diagnosed with adeno, I suffer with painful periods, heavy menstrual cycle and chronic pain every day. Thankfully my pain is managed with small amounts of pain relief however when I have a flare up, I can be in bed for days.

I’m on a Natural Modified Cycle IVF
Natural Modified IVF is a form of IVF treatment which aims to collect the one egg that has been naturally selected by the body.
Due to the adeno, I will be having a freeze all cycle however that’s only if I actually am successful at egg retrieval stage, then the plan is for me to go into a chemical menopause for up to 3 months to reduce the adeno and then go for a FET.

@Shal24 I am so sorry you have had such a tough journey so far! I hope your egg collection will go smoothly. Don't be discouraged by the chemical menopause, it is hard, but you can do it. The worst things for me were hot flushes and insomnia. In case you experience insomnia try and get some sleeping, even some suplements because you really need to sleep properly otherwise your mental health will collapse.
Good luck!
