Hysteroscopy to remove fibroid

Hello.
Long story short; I started U
IVf last August/ September eith Egg collection in October. After starting all the meds after 2 scans they decided it would be a freeze all cycle as they found a submucosal fibroid in my uterus, straight in the middle.
I got 3 embryos. 1 good quality. One ok quality and one bad.

The clinic referred me for a hysteroscopy to remove the fibroid before they can transfer embryo.

Anyway my question is - has anyone had a hysteroscopy before to remove a fibroid?
I had a hysterscopy once before to put an IUD in because they found it too difficult to do in the GP practice. It was horrendous.

If you've had a fibroid removed this way, did they give you sedation? Also, how long did you have to wait to heal before an embryo could be transfered ?

Thanks.

@Tinyteeth sorry to hear about your fibroid. I didn't have a fibroid but I did have a polyp (think it's similar in terms of growth in the lining, mine was caused by the extra hormones due to IVF).

So I had a Hysteroscopy earlier this month and had a general anaesthetic through a cannula in the hand, procedure took about 30 mins and although I had period like cramps when I woke up it was generally ok and I was up and about a couple of hours later.

I was advised no sex for 2 weeks as the lining would be recovering, so to prevent infection and I have been advised I can have a FET on my next cycle which'll hopefully be in Feb

Hi @Tinyteeth I had a hysteroscopy to remove a 1cm polyp under general anaesthetic. It was totally painless and I had no pain afterwards but I had a small amount of bleeding (brown mainly) over the next 6 days. I had this done privately and each consultant advised to have a general.

One said I could have it dont locally but it all depends on my pain threshold. I said that when I had my IUD inserted, I found it terrible and nearly fainted. She suggested in that case to definitely have a general.

My IVF man said to have one menstrual cycle / bleed before the next IVF cycle. My wait time from Hysteroscopy to Egg Collection and Transfer would be 3/4 weeks.

Hope this helps and good luck!!

Hi thank you.
I had my hysteroscopy today and tbh it was awful.
They had to try 4-5 different times putting the scope in and tried 3 different scopes because one wasn't working. He also put his fingers in me without tell me he was about to do it. It was rank. I had local anesthetic in the end but was still painful. :(

He saw the fibroid but said he won't remove it because it would cause scaring and the majority of the fibroid is in the wall and 20% is in the uterus. He says he doesn't think it would effect a pregnancy and has written a letter to the fertility consultant to say that, but the fertility consultant had said specifically he wouldn't transfer an embryo unless the fibroid is removed, so I'm guessing they won't transfer the embryo :(

Hi I had outpatient hysteroskopy to remove 3 polyps prior my frozen transfer last November. It was uncomfortable but doctor and nurses were lovely. Just some cramping and bleeding poost procedure. I was told I can have frozen transfer as soon as result from histology are back. Unfortunately my results took 10 weeks so by the time I got to ultrasound prior my transfer they found what looked like another polyp and said I need another Hysteroscopy this time under GA so they can have a better look. I just had the Hysteroscopy done and I they found it was fibroid this time which was removed and they said I can have frozen transfer on next cycle as long as my histology results are back. The procedure was fine and just very light bleeding this time around. Hopefully won’t have to go through it again.

@H86 we're you sedated or chose to do this without sedation. How long was recovery ? Did you have this done in private or NHS ?

Both done on NHS. I wasn’t given a choice for either. The first one was outpatient - no local anaesthetic or anything but the doctor did say if it was too painful they can stop anytime and I can be referred to have it done under sedation. It was painful but had worst pain in my life so I just went through with it as I didn’t want to delay my IVF even further. The second one they said I have to have under GA in theatre as they wanted to make sure they can have better look and be as invasive as required. Recovery was quite swift. I had lot less bleeding second time from the fibroid removal. It’s like having your period really.

Thankyou @H86 I'm planning on having it without sedation as I've had a few things done with no issues and the clinic said it's a good way for me to see what they see and talk me through it at the same time.
I'm hoping some painkillers before hand will suffice.
