For anybody whose IVF was cancelled due to a CYST

How long did it take before you could start the IVF cycle again!

Our cycle was cancelled due to a cyst on my ovary at the baseline scan. Blood tests showed it was releasing oestrogen so the clinic cancelled as they were worried it would interfere with treatment.

I am on provera tablets for three weeks, then on my next period will have another baseline scan to see if we can go ahead.

I am so worried the cyst will still be there!!

Just wondered if anyone had any experience and how long it took for the cyst to go and to commence treatment

Hi!
I was prescribed the pill for a couple of cycles to tackle a stubborn cyst before treatment- I have read there's very little evidence to support this actually making a difference and in my case it absolutely didn't (side note the pill gave me acute liver failure but that's another story!)

Once I had recovered from the liver issues and was good to go the cyst was still there and the option was to try the pill again and postpone (....no thanks!) or to have it aspirated, I chose aspiration.

The aspiration cost about £700 I think and was done on day two of the cycle- literally the same procedure as an egg collection and really straight forward.

However the aspiration did have an effect on that ovary for the cycle, it seemed to respond poorly- the consultant mentioned it being bruised.

KindIVF (mild) 8 eggs collected, 5 fertilised, 3 day 5 embryos.

1 fresh transfer and currently 18 weeks :)

Best of luck with your journey, it's wild!

Hi ladies
i had a cyst on my last cycle (mild IVF) and had to cancel the cycle
i was given microgynon for 3 weeks after which i went for my day 2 scan to check cyst has gone
it luckily had and I was able to commence with my stims the next month from when the cyst first formed. Hope this helps x

No advice to give OP but just to say that I'm in the same situation- I found out yesterday that I have also have a cyst. We were referred for IVF a couple of weeks ago (but I've since found out the clinic has a 30+ week wait just for them to contact us.

I'm very worried that we'll wait all that time (with only a couple of months left before funding expires) and then they'll delay or refuse treatment even more.

I hope there's a solution for you.

And congratulations @JazBag 🎊

autumnpumpkinlattes · 01/02/2024 14:04

Thank you all and congrats @JazBag !

I am just on my way to the clinic for a day 1 scan to see if the cyst has gone. I've spent 3 weeks on provera so hoping that helped get rid of it. So nervous 😔 will be devastated if we need to postpone again.

@Waitinggame42023 did they tell you what type of cyst you have? I'm not an expert but from what I understand there are different types of cysts and some interfere, some don't, some go away on their own, some need to be removed etc. hopefully yours is one that just disappears before your treatment

@autumnpumpkinlattes best of luck!!

autumnpumpkinlattes · 03/02/2024 13:32

Hi all and thanks @JazBag

We had good news in the end, the nurse who scanned me said the cyst has 'collapsed in on itself' which means I can go ahead with this cycle. It basically means the cyst is disappearing so I didn't even need a blood test either.

They said provera usually makes this happen so for anybody in the future who reads this thread if you are on provera have faith that it will help get rid of the cyst in a few weeks 😊

I went abroad for ivf in November//December and an oestrogen producing cyst was found at baseline. As we'd just got there, we decided for aspiration rather than cancelling and going home. I managed to get 5 eggs collected, all fertilised, and 2 day 3 embryos frozen. The original plan was to transfer same cycle, but this was changed due to the cyst, and obviously very low egg number (I have low AMH). Also due to low AMH he didn't want to put me on the pill

AnnieStar12 · 29/02/2024 11:46

Reading this thread with interest as I've just been for my baseline scan this morning (due to start stims tomorrow) and there is a 3cm haemorrhagic cyst and I'm not sure yet whether they will cancel this cycle. Will go back tomorrow for another scan and maybe some tests. I've just come on my period so hoping somehow that will mean it miraculously collapses overnight.

Do you all know what type of cyst you had?

@autumnpumpkinlattes how are you getting on with your treatment? Do you think it was the Provera that helped reduce the cyst then?

@jazbag and @californiacooper what is involved in the aspiration? And do you know if you can have this and then start stims on the same cycle?

So gutted to get this close to starting treatment and now there may be more delays..

californiacooper · 29/02/2024 11:52

@AnnieStar12 I had a functional cyst. I started stim the day before the surgery. I had a heave sedation and they stuck a needle into the cyst and sucked out all the fluid. We carried on with the stim, he said ideally you would cancel the cycle and only go ahead on a good one (no cysts), but I was abroad and we had planned being there for 3 weeks for the treatment. I only got 5 eggs to collect (and 2 day 3 embryos frozen) which may have been higher had we have gone ahead on a different cycle, but I have low AMH so will be a poor responder.

JazBag · 29/02/2024 12:00

@AnnieStar12 my experience very similar to @californiacooper

Simple procedure - it's literally the same as egg collection, really straightforward.

All I'd add is my ovary did not respond as well and the clinic said it was probably bruised, so looking back it might have been better to wait another cycle.

My cyst grew again during treatment too as it responded to the hormones.

That said I'm 24 weeks now, so it all ended up as it should.

Good luck, try to relax, it's mentally brutal!
Xxx

californiacooper · 29/02/2024 12:39

@JazBag was that your first round? I'm currently waiting for surgical management for miscarriage :( I conceived naturally between my egg collection and when I was due to go back for FET. (I guess because of all of the medications) but it stopped progressing at 6 weeks.

JazBag · 29/02/2024 14:49

@californiacooper oh I'm so sorry to hear that. I've been there and it's sucks, look after yourself and take time to heal xx

It was our first round, completely expected it to fail, we were very very lucky xx

californiacooper · 29/02/2024 16:46

@JazBag well I have all my fingers and toes crossed that I'll be successful on the first round too... just had a little blip in the middle ...

JazBag · 29/02/2024 20:03

@californiacooper everything crossed for you 🥰

AnnieStar12 · 29/02/2024 20:09

Thanks for the replies, helpful to hear others experiences.

@JazBag wow, congrats. I hold so much hope for these first time lucky stories!

@californiacooper im so sorry for your loss. I too has surgical management for a MMC back in Dec, that pregnancy was following medicated IUI procedure. Look after yourself and hopefully you’ll have a healthy frostie waiting to be implanted once you’ve healed.

autumnpumpkinlattes · 03/03/2024 19:03

Hi @AnnieStar12 sorry you find yourself in a similar situation. Did they cancel your cycle in the end? Yes I do 100% think the provera helped. The clinic were not even a tiny bit worried that it would still be there by my next baseline scan, they just very confidently said the provera would get rid of it.

So sorry @californiacooper x

@autumnpumpkinlattes thanks for your message. Luckily, when I went back the next day it had already started collapsing. It had almost halved in size overnight so they said I can crack on and start the injections as they weren’t worried. I’m now on day 3 of injections. Hopefully it won’t come back!

How are you getting on with your treatment?

I read somewhere online that a hot compress can help shrink cysts so I kept a hot water bottle on my abdomen for 24 hours. I don’t really believe those kind of old wives tails, and it’s probs just a coincidence, but for anyone reading this thread for info in future might be worth a try!
