No Sex allowed after HyCosy?

CatmumTTC · 23/01/2024 16:05

Hi all

I've just had my HyCosy done (ouch) with foam.

As I was literally heading out the door the consultant said, "oh by the way no intercourse until your next period, we don't want you to get pregnant this cycle." This wasn't on any of the information I was given in advance of this procedure. My cycles are usually over 35 days long so that's a long wait for us!

Pregnancy risk is low as I don't tend to ovulate naturally (PCOS) but I've been trying loads of PCOS lifestyle changes recently and was looking forward to trying this cycle, especially as I've heard HyCosy can give a bit of a boost. I can't see any information about having sex after HyCosy online either. All the information just says not before.

Are we silly(/desperate) to ignore the consultant and have sex anyway? Did anyone else get this same advice?

We've gone private so part of me was wondering if she said this to increase the chance that we'll go for (pay for) IUI at our next consultation.

Yes. silly. either trust him or don’t. but don’t cherry pick his professional expertise

🙄

No OP it won’t be because of that

regenerate · 23/01/2024 16:08

It is important that there is no possibility of your being pregnant before the HyCoSy scan. Please do not have intercourse from the first day of your period until after the examination.

bollox it wasn’t on any of the docs. It is literally everywhere

CatmumTTC · 23/01/2024 16:17

@regenerate Yes not having sex before is all over the documentation but this is about afterwards.

@regenerate she's asking for advice, there's no need to be rude

CatmumTTC · 23/01/2024 16:46

In case my original message sounded like I don't listen to clinical advice, I do, I just like to feel better informed. I should have asked more questions when they said that but I was in lots of pain from the procedure and just wanted to get out of there. So I guess I am just trying to make sense of why she would say to write this cycle off.

@CatmumTTC After a Hystero Contrast Sonography or Hycosy you can have intercourse as long as you are comfortable. Its a form of flushing out your tubes and you'll have a better chance of that positive. Good luck. And its okay to ask I mean when going for any high risk medical op we sometimes go for second third opinion consultants and practitioners themselves go to other for advise on how to proceed. Don't be disheartened by the AI response. And please do keep us updated.

CatmumTTC · 23/01/2024 20:28

Thanks@Sherr33 I think my husband will want to wait until next cycle because he's a stickler for rules and has much better patience than I do 😞 but he doesn't go through the monthly torment in the same way I do! I might just call them tomorrow to ask why her advice was different to normal.

This link should hopefully take you to NHS Herts hycosy leaflet
https://www.hertsfertility.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/HyCoSy-Patient-information-leaflet.pdf

It says you can have sex after. My consultant at the time told me to TTC that cycle. The effects may last a few months (or if a tube has been unblocked that can be a good thing).

I did need IVF in the end but in your shoes would definitely try. And if you’re thinking of IUI weigh it up with greater success rates with IVF would be my advice.

I was never advised not to NOT have sex afterwards. Sex is perfectly fine once you feel upto it again .
I have pcos , and found after my dye test my periods actually became regular and I got pregnant following cycle ( 18 years of nothing) miscarried but continued having regular cycles after my loss. Year passed and don't result in another pregnancy so we did ivf and currently 15 weeks.
For me the dye test was like a miracle

CatmumTTC · 24/01/2024 08:27

@LongerthanMrTicklesarms I'm really quite hesitant about IVF because of all the needles and strain it puts on the woman's body. And I've heard so many stories about women who had failed IVF but then conceived naturally, makes me wonder if we rush women into it without really acknowledging how invasive it is. It will be a last resort for us if everything else fails.

I've been told to go for IUI because having the sperm placed inside is only £150 more than all the other stuff I'll need to get myself ovulating anyway - the scans, letrizole and trigger shot. May aswell increase our chances. Because I've not managed to ovulate naturally - though I'm trying insotil now and think I possibly ovulated last month, hence why I want to try naturally this cycle.

@MoonIightDreamer that's interesting about how it affected your cycles. Mine are usually really long, but last cycle I tried insotil and managed to get the cycle down to 32 days. I also had different pms symptoms so thought I might have ovulated finally. Fingers crossed the HyCosy will get them even closer to a standard cycle.

MoonIightDreamer · 24/01/2024 12:20

@CatmumTTC have you tried clomid / letrzole ?
I had taken clomid and found it did help me ovulate, although we just didn't get pregnant. I've no idea how the dye test helped. The doctor who did the test told me sometimes the dye can help flush the tubes out temporarily . Sometimes blood, tissue, debris accumulates in them.
Do you have lean pcos? Or are you overweight?
I lost 2 stone to get into a healthy weight range and for me that made a huge difference in periods. 28 days cycles and ovulated bang on day 14 every month but of course i still couldn't get pregnant. Im so thankful at least our first cycle of ivf worked

SErunner · 24/01/2024 22:11

I specifically asked as they could see on mine I was about to ovulate. I was told it was fine to have sex, in fact was actively encouraged to 😂

CatmumTTC · 24/01/2024 22:41

@MoonIightDreamer Three cycles of letrizole plus trigger shot and scans, with option for IUI, is the treatment option I've been offered at create fertility, where I had the HyCosy done. Was advised to get all the other tests done to rule everything else out before paying for the treatment so that's why I've had the HyCosy first.

I've got lean PCOS, BMI usually around 18.5 so I have been told I could put a bit of weight on. I used to just binge chocolate and sugary crap all the time because I never got fat but insulin resistance and high stress hormones are the route cause for my PCOS. So I've been on a high protein low sugar diet for last couple of months. I've definitely noticed a huge improvement in my sugar cravings and even put on some weight so hoping that's a positive step towards ovulating naturally. Otherwise I'll start letrizole with IUI in a couple of months.

@SErunner I wish I'd asked more questions, like if they could see how my ovaries were doing this cycle. But I was in so much pain I just shut my eyes and yogi breathed through it 😬

Yeah the leaflet I got from them literally says at the bottom to resume intercourse afterwards.

Hey @CatmumTTC i know this is an old thread but I am wondering the same thing - just had hycosy and no one said anything to me about ttc this month but I am seeing different info everywhere - so just wondering what you did in the end?

Also hoping you got your BFP 🤞

CatmumTTC · 14/09/2024 07:53

@jenkh91 heya yes we did resume TTC that same cycle with no issues. Hycosy did regulate my cycles and I got a BFP 6 months later but unfortunately ended in miscarriage. So our journey continues! Good luck to you x
