Light periods, Mirena, Recurrent Miscarriage

Hi All,

I had a mirena coil removed in February and have had two MMC since. One at 10ish weeks in July and another in October also at 10ish weeks. In both instances I fell pregnant on the second month of trying, so I don’t seem to have any difficulty falling pregnant, but I haven’t stayed pregnant.

I had the mirena for 7 years and it was changed in the middle. I had no periods while on the Mirena. Prior to the mirena, in my mid 20s, my periods were quite heavy, painful and would last 5 days with tampon changes required throughout the days.

Now my period is very light, 2 or 3 days at the most and for the majority of the period, I could get away without a pad or tampon if I wanted to. I don’t really have any cramps, I don’t get any spots, my boobs don’t swell and hurt like they used to.

i feel like my hormones are dormant. I don’t seem to struggle to get pregnant but I don’t stay pregnant.

Has anyone else experienced light periods post Mirena?

i think this may be linked to my miscarriages which both occurred at c 10 weeks. i know a thin endometrial lining can make it difficult to get pregnant, but can it support a pregnancy to 10 weeks and then fail?

I may be barking up the wrong tree here.

thanks

Sorry to hear about your losses - I’ve been there and it’s so hard. I don’t have any experience of Mirena, but I had recurrent miscarriages and felt that my periods were much lighter following them.

I ended up doing IVF, where they monitor your lining, and it was actually always within the recommended thickness. So having light periods (mine were then only 2-3 days of light flow, whereas they had previously been 5 days of heavier flow) doesn’t necessarily mean your lining is too thin to support a pregnancy.

Thanks @sweetpea2000 , it’s a minefield, especially at the start of investigations when you don’t know up from down.

I would have thought that a good lining would result in a fairly substantial/heavy period? And a thin lining would be light on bleeding and over quickly, is that not always the case?

I can find a lot online about struggling to get pregnant with a thin lining and early losses (before 6 weeks) with a thin lining, but I can’t seem to find if you can get to 10 weeks with a thin lining.

between both pregnancies mentioned above, i have been scanned 5 times and no one has ever mentioned my lining looking thin, then again, I don’t know if it’s something that they really look at when they’re scanning you for viability?

I know, it’s a total minefield and so overwhelming to navigate all the tests etc. Are you seeing anyone for investigations into your losses?

I can’t help much, I just remember worrying about this and telling the sonographer I was worried about my lining when I had it checked for my IVF cycle. I was having very light periods but it was the perfect thickness. I also remember searching on here and finding other threads that said the same thing. So I’m not sure that your menstrual flow necessarily corresponds directly to the thickness of your lining. It’s quite normal for women to have periods of 2-3 days light flow, though I know it’s confusing when your periods change, which I think they can over time or with age or hormonal changes.

I don’t think they would check your lining during a viability scan, unless it was specifically requested.

Are you having any tests done at this point?

@sweetpea2000 and @4thcyclelucky thanks for replying, I really appreciate it.

i have been referred to Tommy’s but the appointment isn’t for another 4/5 months.

I have an NHS appointment at the start of December which I believe is with a fertility specialist, hence what got me thinking about this. I actually see him on the day im due to ovulate, maybe it’s a sign.

I’ve read the NHS investigations aren’t too great and Tommy’s will be more thorough, but I can always ask about this.

Great that you have an appointment coming up. Wishing you all the best with next steps.
