Taking leftover clomid without scans?

Hi,

I have PCOS and tried for my daughter for 3 years. After 3 years I finally was referred to the fertility clinic at my local hospital who prescribed me clomid, and it worked 1st cycle which I was obviously over the moon with. I did get mild ovarian overstimulation but I wasn't scanned at all through the process, just when I became pregnant and the pain persisted I was scanned to check they weren't dangerous then this was checked again at my 12 and 20 week scan.

My question is, I have 2 rounds of clomid left, the nhs didn't scan me to start with, but would it be completely irresponsible of me/frowned upon to take the leftover rounds without guidance? I'm no longer under the fertility clinic as they discharged me but they wouldn't give me clomid again anyway since I already have a child.

I know the signs of ovarian hyper stimulation etc, and if I experienced any pain I'd go and get checked. But would you take it? Or would you go private? The private fertility clinic is charging all the initial fees for tests and consultations then around £400 per round with scans...

Help!!

I organised my own monitoring scans and blood tests when taking clomid.

Also check what you are entitled to where you live I know of people prescribed clomid for secondary infertility, they were not entitled to more invasive interventions on the NHS but did get clomid.

Or get a private prescription. The private clinic fee seems very reasonable if it includes scans.

Definitely not and most definitely not since your at risk of ohss.

I used clomid , they only tracked my first cycle with a scan and other 3 unmonitored. Ended damaging my ovary and now I only have one only left to try and harvest my eggs from.

By the way. Yes nhs can still prescribe you clomid even if you have a child. They just wouldn't fund ivf ect
I seriously don't recommend taking it without monitoring. Even if you did go hospital , the fact you've taken that on your own accord fertility clinic and even gp would be unwilling to help you again as you've used it irresponsibly

@BlackLotus I’m sorry to hear about your ovarian damage and hope you can get enough eggs from your other ovary. I’m not recommending that people take drugs unregulated, but it’s not true to say that in itself doing so would disqualify a person from receiving help.

Thanks both! Yeah just confirmed what my brain was telling me really... I know I shouldn't take them but infertility just messes with my head! So desperate for it to happen but know this isn't the way!

I don't mind going private but it isn't really in the budget, but if worse comes to worse the money could be raised! Interesting about being prescribed clomid again by the NHS. They told me the 1st time I wasn't really eligible (husband had daughter from previous relationship), but the doctor on the day saw me break down and I literally begged her for it! I will get a referral again and see where I get! Thank you.

@LongerthanMrTicklesarms I said that because that was what I was told by my nhs gynae who runs the fertility clinic in in hospital.
I was also told something similar by the nhs fertility clinic were at now doing ivf, if we didn't follow the guidelines set out we would be discharged from the clinic and ineligible for further treatment.

@jinxxy you shouldn't have an issue being prescribed clomid because it's only when your requiring ivf ect that they have to apply for funding from the board and its then the requirements are set out. No previous children , within bmi range ect

I had absolutely no issue obtaining clomid again but wish i hadnt as it caused me to develop a large cyst which twisted my ovary and cut off the blood supply. How many cycles did you do it for last time ? As you can't do it for more than 6 cycles ever.

Honestly if they are not willing to give it irs really just worth it to spend the money to ensure your doing it safely as you don't want to end up like me

@BlackLotus Really sorry it caused so much trouble for you! It's definitely a bit scary when you read the side effects etc!! I hope you have success with your treatment! It worked on the first cycle for us surprisingly after 3 years. I think I'll probably have to go private and hopefully it'll work relatively quickly again. Thank you! X
