Aspirin during IVF - pros and cons?

Sadly I have just had a failed (BFN) FET with our only frozen embryo. Due to one previous miscarriage (unexplained after testing), our consultant put me on 75mg of aspirin daily from CD1 on the build up to this FET. He said the aspirin could help build a thick lining and reduce the chance of miscarriage by keeping my blood thin. However, on transfer day he suddenly told me to stop the aspirin which of course I did and he put me on Clexane post-transfer instead. Stopping the aspirin felt like quite an out of the blue decision because my protocol said I’d be on it until OTD and he didn’t really explain why he was suddenly telling me to stop it. I actually had a tiny bit of pre and post-transfer spotting which I worry could have been caused by the aspirin and then a BFN result 14 days later.

As I look ahead to starting the prep for a fresh cycle ASAP, I’m not sure whether I should ask to be put on aspirin again or not. Does aspirin help in the stims / follicle growth / egg production process? Is aspirin helpful even when women who’ve had miscarriages don’t have a blood clotting disorder? Or can aspirin actually work against implantation? Any advice / experiences / opinions would be gratefully received! Thank you so much!

Hello OP, after an early miscarriage I was told by consultant to take aspirin during the next ivf cycle. During that cycle I got my bfp and now have a 2 yo DS. I don't know for sure whether the aspirin helped or not, but it was added to my protocol as clinic thought it may help.
Good luck

Thank you for replying @SantoPalo. Glad to hear the aspirin worked well for you and possibly helped give you your lovely son!

@Cloudstreet85 aspirin irreversibly inhibits COX 2 which is important for implantation, LMWH like clexane can help implantation. I wouldn't take aspirin until an established pregnancy. LMWH should be used instead, which I started on CD8.

Thank you for your reply, @Gardenlady543. Interesting that aspirin can inhibit COX-2 ... it makes me wonder why so many women seem to be put on aspirin throughout IVF. Though perhaps for women with blood clotting disorders the likely benefits of using aspirin are more highly weighted. I'm pleased you mention LMWH because my consultant has now said that I won't be on aspirin for my next cycle but I will be on inhixa. Hopefully the inhixa helps and doesn't cause any issues! Thank you again for your comment. Wishing you all the best!

That's great news @Cloudstreet85 I'm glad they've taken the aspirin out, you can start it with an established pregnancy as it has benefits later on in preventing preeclampsia, but LMWH pre implantation is best, if you can ask to start it at CD8 then it should be well in your system by the time of the transfer and hopefully help with the lining :)

Thank you for the tip about starting inhixa early, @Gardenlady543. Yes after the dodgy bleeding I had early in our last attempt I’m quite pleased to have been taken off the aspirin. Thanks again - you’ve been so helpful!
