Recurrent miscarriage - what to try next?

Wishingonastar90 · 05/08/2023 00:34

Hi all,
I am currently going through a 4th miscarriage in 2 years. This last mc I was taking progesterone and that only masked the bleeding until I stopped them but I felt something wasn’t right from about 5 weeks. I am contemplating taking low dose aspirin as have seen mixed evidence about the effectiveness of this.
Anyone had recurrent miscarriage and tried something that may have worked? We are under Tommys but tbh all results have been ‘normal’ so it’s a case of keep trying atm! And I just don’t know how we can keep trying with not changing anything and this leading to different outcome?! DH and I are taking preconception supplements etc. anyone had similar situation? Thanks

So sorry for your losses. It must be so hard.

My doctor says that the main reason for a miscarriage is faulty embryos (that don't have a chance to develop properly to begin with). In our case they recommended pgt-a testing to see if any would be normal/abnormal.

Sorry for your losses, it’s so hard.

You could look into sperm DNA fragmentation testing?

My recurrent miscarriage blood tests showed everything at normal levels. After multiple failed IVF transfers and miscarriages, our consultant is recommending we look at the sperm. I’m still learning about it myself and we haven’t done it yet, but thought I’d suggest it as an option here! Good luck x

@Wishingonastar90 so sorry for your losses. I am with you.
What kind on investigation have you done? Sorry if I will make mistakes because I am Italian but I will try to tell you what I have done.

  • First of all you and your husband should to the genetic tests, in Italian we call it "genetic mapping", I don't know if it makes sense in English. Then I have done all the blood tests for thrombophilia screen (Antithrombin (previously called Antithrombin III)
  • Protein C
  • Protein S
  • Lupus Anticoagulant
  • Factor V Leiden
  • Prothrombin Gene Mutation
  • anti-β-2-Glycoprotein-1 antibodies
  • anti-Cardiolipin antibodies
Plus more. Then I have done a hysteroscopy and I found out I had a chronic infection and iperplasia.

4 miscarriages is a lot and it is not true that they are always due to genetic problems with the embryo. Unfortunately I did all these tests by myself in Italy because in UK no one was listening to me. Only to prove them I was right!

Demand that they investigate further.

I'm in a similar situation. I've had two miscarriages and a chemical pregnancy in 14months. I've been through the tests and all that was noticed was elevated levels of lh and fsh (around 25). I've had two months showing elevated results and then one month of normal (but I was on letrozole so not sure if that impacts it).

Were your hormone levels ok? I have a really low amh too which showed when I went for testing at the fertility clinic.

Sorry for your losses, 4 is a lot and it must be very tough for you. Not knowing what is causing it is frustrating. I'm about to start ivf this month.

Thanks for your message. Yes I have heard it could be that but also there is research about the uterine lining. How did you get on with this testing for the embryos?

Thank you @evalooda it is a tough journey! I have a few more tests I want to try but will keep this in mind, hubby has had a sperm analysis test which is ‘normal’

we haven’t had genetic testing but have had all the other tests you’ve listed and everything came back as ‘normal’. I have looked into a biopsy to test for endometritis and am going to request this through the nhs. It’s just a minefield trying to figure out why it keeps happening! I am 33 so although getting on in terms of ‘optimum reproductive age’ I would hope to have some genetically normal eggs left particularly 2 years ago when we first started this journey! 🤷‍♀️
have you taken medication following the results of the hysteroscopy? Wishing you the best of luck xx

I’m sorry for your losses and that you are also in a similar situation. I have had hormone tests done and all was normal range. I went for AMH which was slightly lower than the average for my age. Wishing you all the best for your treatment this month 🙏🏻 please let me know how it goes, we were offered a referral to IVF previously if we had not caught by next month so I’m going to push that this still goes ahead as I’m not pregnant due to another MC xx

@Wishingonastar90 yes, I took antibiotics for 2 weeks for the endometritis and 3 months of progesterone pills for the iperplasia. Then I have repeated the Hysteroscopy

Katty123 · 06/08/2023 09:32

Hi there

I am sorry for your losses.

I have had several miscarriages and ended up going through immune testing. This showed I had a high level of NK cells. I am now being treated for that and my current pregnancy is progressing (so far). So may be worth looking into. The treatment can vary depending on what your levels are but many women have success with this.

You could also look at different types of progesterone. Some clinics recommend Lubion injections as well as cyclogest.

I would also recommend DNA fragmentation for your partner. This is different to the normal sperm analysis test and will need to be done at a private clinic.

Wishing you the best of luck xx

Wishingonastar90 · 06/08/2023 13:55

Thank you @Katty123 I am looking into Nk cell testing at the Coventry implantation clinic. It’s good to hear that you managed to find a cause and hopefully all will go well for you this pregnancy 🙏🏻 hope the same will be found for me too, it’s such a tough journey x
