Day 2 after egg retrieval

We did an egg retrieval 2 days ago. Yesterday (day 1) we got a call that we had 14 fertilized eggs. We got a call today (day 2) to change our transfer to a day 5 transfer. I asked the woman how many embryos were left and she said 9. Is this normal? Has anyone else had experience with embryos dropping off this early? We were so excited by 14 but became a little deflated today.

Hi @md12345
The drop off is completely normal. There is no set number of course, for any part of this process but I think I was told that a 30% drop-off at every stage was normal. I had 17 eggs, 15 fertilised and I was left with 5 blasts, which I was delighted with. You could expect to have anything between 1 and 6 blasts but some women get more and sadly, some less. Good luck, I hope you get good news at your update call x

Hi, congratulations - 14 eggs is an amazing number!
I was told to expect a 50% drop off at each stage. So 50% of eggs to fertilise, and of those 50% to make it to D5 blastocyst.
I had 10 eggs so was advised to expect 5 to fertilise and from those 5, to expect 2-3 embryos.
Your numbers sound good, they have moved it to D5 as they are optimistic that there will be some embryos for transfer and likely freezing too. Good luck for the wait, it can be brutal! x

As the above has said, I remember being really disappointed! Being only 28, I expected more eggs and a better fertilisation rate. And hated everyone saying “it only takes one” but it’s so true, although I know it’s still disappointing.

We had 11 eggs, 9 mature and we done ICSI, 5 fertilised! This drop of had me worrying none would make it to day 5 blast, but all 5 embryos made it to day 5🥹💙 all but 1 were top quality too xx

Hello all
i am currently in the my first icsi cycle and had my embryo transfer bank holiday Monday. Yesterday i decided to prepare dinner and picked out the potatoes from the cupboard and continued to fill the saucepans with the veg and water and lift onto the hob. I didn’t even think whilst doing it as it’s just normal day to day things but now really worrying I may have ruined my chance. Can anyone shed any light? This two week wait is hard! Thank you x

@Sophiegeorgiaxx I really don't think you need to worry about that. As far as I know they tell you to avoid heavy lifting and intense exercise as it can damage your ovaries which are already swollen from the IVF. If that had happened it would have been very painful so you would know about it. I was told I could continue to live life as normal apart from over exertion as above. I carry a heavy bag for work and continued to lift it several times every day in the 2ww and still got a BFP. As long as it's not painful you will be fine x

Here to give an update! Thank you all for your positive vibes and words of encouragement as that wait and knowing so little each day is brutal!

We ended up with 6 blasts and 1 transferred. All great quality! We recognize how lucky we are and wishing the best for all of you!
