?Polyp found during IVF cycle

Hi guys,

Just had 2 weeks of ‘down-regulation’ and went for a scan Friday where they think they saw a uterine polyp… I have been told to continue with the stims and they will aim to do the egg retrieval, but may not be able to do the embryo transfer due to the polyp.

It’s a bit random as no polyps on previous scans - my last one being January. They did say that it is difficult to tell in ultrasounds and it could be a blood clot or something, they will keep an eye… next scan is on Friday.

I know this is very specific, but anyone had a similar experience? Really want to go ahead with transfer etc!

I had a FET last September and they found a polyp during one on my monitoring scans. (It wasn't there in my fresh cycle a few months before.) I was told it was ok to carry on with the FET, but unfortunately it was unsuccessful for us.

I then had the polyp removed. I paid to have it removed privately, as the wait on the nhs is 6 months in my area. I then did another FET which was successful.

Not sure if removing the polyp was what made the difference 🤷‍♀️ My doctor said that some believe that polyps can affect implantation but there is no evidence to prove that yet.

During my initial investigations and scans, they found a polyp in me too. They have strongly advised that I get it removed before transfer, as it can make the embryo much less likely to implant. I'm getting the polyp removed via a hysteroscopy and starting IVF the next menstrual cycle, so it has delayed things a bit but it's worth it.

Just to add that it costs around £3k for the hysteroscopy, surgeon fees and anaesthesia.

Thank you for your replies!

Yeah I suspected getting a Polyp removed on the nhs would take a while. Glad you managed to get it removed and congratulations on the successful cycle!

3K to get the polyp removed?! 🫣 to be honest I think I’m going to be told the same about getting it removed… Thinking I’ll ask to see if I can pay privately for them to remove it while I am sedated for my egg collection… Never know

@LolaBumble
Hiya
I hope you’re doing well.
Ive just been told I have a cervical polyp during a scan and have an appmnt with Gynae in 2 weeks.
Im worried sick, I was also due to start IVF and now not sure if this will set me back.
How did your appmnt go if you don’t mind me asking- of course feel free to say no.

Hi,

Oh dear I am sorry to hear that. I hope your appointment with gynae goes well and it doesn’t hold you back too long.

For me, they only ever looked at it on ultrasound as it was uterine and it appeared once we had already started the ivf cycle. The consultant was not too concerned, she thought it might be a polyp but I think it must have been quite small. Ended up having the transfer anyway and it’s worked!

I totally sympathise it is horrible waiting, really hope things go well for you x

I’ve just been told something similar. Do you mind me asking what your next steps were? X

LolaBumble · 27/03/2025 14:05

So for us the consultant decided to go ahead with the transfer anyway and it worked! I think whatever they thought was a polyp was small, it was pointed out during a couple of my pregnancy scans but never an issue. Just in the process of a frozen embryo transfer and nothing on the scans, so whatever it was has gone away!

Best of luck to you 🫶

Thank you for getting back to me! That’s great news!
In my case the consultant has also said to leave it as it is cervical and that we will do a mock embryo transfer just to make sure we can get to the right place. Fingers crossed!! X

LolaBumble · 28/03/2025 18:29

That sounds like a good plan for you! Fingers crossed it all goes well 😊

Hey everyone.

I think polyps can easily come and go. I had a polyp just before I started down regulation and they said they would just go ahead with everything and then if it was still there or 'in the way' they would do a freeze all cycle and then implant the embryo when it looked clear. I was still due to have a bleed during down regulation and they said a chance it would 'come out' during the bleed. Anyway - they never saw it again.

Did my stims and had fresh transfer all fine. Hopefully it shouldn't affect you and they said they if needed they could still have done transfer with it in place as it was small.

Freeze all isn't a bad idea though and it might pass with your next bleed. Also gives your ovaries a chance to calm down.

Good luck!
