Fresh or Frozen transfer advice

Hello there!

I was hoping someone could give me some advice regarding fresh and frozen transfers.

I recently had a fertility MOT and it seems everything is OK. My AMH was 45 and I had 39 follicles. My OH is yet to get his SA as he works abroad. Not sure if that is all relevant but I'm thinking I should give you all the details so I can get informed advice!

Anyway, the Dr suggested that if I were to go down the IVF route it would be advisable to collect as many eggs as possible and then freeze the embryos. She explained that I am a likely candidate for OHSS so after egg retrieval I should wait/rest for 2-3 months before transferring the embryos.

I'm currently 39 and my OH is 52 and this would be our first child.

Does this sound like the right treatment plan? And what are the succes rates for frozen embryo transfers?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you’ve been advised this treatment plan because of your risk of OHSS due to the number of follicles you have.

OHSS can be dangerous and you certainly need time to recover and let your body get back to normal. I don’t know enough about it to advise, but I would recommend researching what OHSS is.

For my last IVF cycle, it was originally put down as a freeze all by the clinic as standard. But when it came to it, I was told this advice has changed because the success rates between fresh and frozen transfers are negligible, so they went ahead with a fresh transfer. That failed for me, but I don’t think this had anything to do with it being fresh.

Also, even though you have a really good AMH, poor egg quality may still be a factor due to your age. So the advice to collect your eggs as soon as possible is also understandable.

Have you been TTC for a while? It seems your stats are good so I wondered if you’ve tried naturally yet?

Thank you for your response @whomoon I felt very nervous posting!

I am sorry to hear about your transfer. When is your next one? And will this be your first?

We have been TTC for 3-4 months. I am fully aware we're in the early stages but considering our ages we thought it best to explore our IVF options now. We have decided we will give it 3 more cycles before we start the IVF process.

@TypingaThesis Thank you. It was tough but we’re very logical and the embryo just wasn’t meant to be. It was my first transfer of my first cycle, and we did breeze through the cycle without any issue so had put a lot of hope into it just working. We have one more embryo in the freezer so will use that in a couple of months after having some down time to not think about babies for a bit!

it’s great you’ve taken that first step to find out your fertility. For me, that was actually the hardest! The more information you have in front of you, the better equipped you’ll be.
it turns out we’re unexplained infertility after 2+ years trying, so you just don’t know what you’ll be faced with until you get on that TTC train!

6 months TTC is a great milestone to aim for. Get the SA done in the meantime when your DP can, so at least you’ll have covered all bases and have that info.

Hopefully you won’t need to go down any route and you’ll fall naturally x
