I’m really interested to hear as I’m struggling to deicde whether we are ready to do it yet. It seems like such a big step!

We went to our doctor after trying for a year. But I was already 37 by then so we didn't feel we had much time to lose. I think it really depends on age. If I'd been 30 I'd probably have tried a bit longer.

Best of luck and feel free to ask any more questions!

I waited just over 12 months before we saw the doctor. I was 39 at the time just about to turn 40. If you do need ivf the referral process/nhs wait times might take quite a while so that might be something to factor in. Good luck!

We have been trying for over 4 years. I was 30 and OH was 34 when we started, so thought got time and also other things got in a way so we were not desperate at the time, thought all was going to work out fine. Changed jobs, moved places. Now Im 34 almost 35 and he is 38. If I could turn the time back, I would start looking into all much sooner, probably 6 months ttc and start investigating it. Especially if you are trying to do this though nhs. It took us 6 months to just get first gp appointment, get blood test and semen analysis (once), eventually got referral for gyn app to just find out that there is another 6 months wait for the initial call from the nurse who would then book a place on a waiting list for the very first initial ultrasound scan… and then would be another long wait for that appointment … and this is all for just initial investigation not even referral for nhs funding yet.
We decided to go privately now and that is much much quicker :) And still think the sooner you start the more options and flexibility you have.

Depends on your age and how long you've been trying really

It took my doctor 8 months to make the referral to the hospital's gynaecology department (due to her incompetence). But once the referral had been made and I was seen by a gynaecology specialist at the hospital, things moved really quickly. We were referred to the IVF clinic and seen by them within weeks. I think this really varies across the country. There was no waitlist at our clinic.

Hi everyone thanks for the responses. It’s secondary infertility so all private. My worry is they seem to be more money focussed and I want to make sure it’s the right thing to do.how many goes did it take everyone?

I started when 38, now 39. I've done one cycle and got 2 embryos. First transfer failed and now 5 weeks pregnant with second frozen transfer. It's very very early days so I'm trying not to count my chickens! If this doesn't work out we'll have to start again.

I’m following with interest, as wondering the same. Possible secondary infertility with us.

Waited 3 years for our 1st, unexplained infertility, had investigations then naturally got pregnant. Have been trying for about 10 months now, but getting a bit nervous as time has passed and now I’m 38.

I feel like we should just hang on, as it always feels like this month could be the one. But not sure when to draw the line and go for it.
I know what you mean, all the clinics seem very sales-driven!

@Newnamenewname109870 I started IVF after 3 years however I really wish I'd been to have my AMH/AFC checked before that. If I had done that I'd have started IVF sooner as I would have known about my low AMH.

Unexplained fertility 2 full rounds of IVF for us. Your GP can send you for some of the checks free.

You can have ovulation bloods done, a HSG your other half can have sperm analysis.

It will be Different for you as going private means no waiting lists but honestly if it's something you really want. Don't wait to long as fertility declines.

Good luck

Hi @Newnamenewname109870 - I appreciate an old thread but was wondering what you decided to do in the end? I’ve been ttc baby number 1 for a year, all tests and scans so far have come back as normal so the doctor has basically said it’s a matter of time and to just keep trying until we feel ready to try ivf - which just seems like such a massive jump!

We just went for it in the end, about a month after I started the thread. It all happened very quickly and happy to say I am expecting in the new year :)

Good luck! If money isn’t an issue, id say get cracking. I had a good experience though and I know ivf isn’t for everyone. You can ask for more tests though to check more things out. One thing you can look for is what your ovarian reserve is like.

I've decided to start ivf in January after 2 years of trying! Secondary infertility for us! My amh is quite low at 3 especially for my age at 30 so I'm hoping my eggs are of good quality!

Mine was low too (although about 6) despite also being young. They were very supportive though and said being young definitely helped. Good thing is you’ve had a child before. Good luck!
