Fertility/miscarriage clinics Scotland

We've had 3 consecutive miscarriages after having our first child. Blood tests at NHS recurrent miscarriage clinic all came back clear. The miscarriages might very well have been due to my age as they happened in my early/mid forties, but we're thinking of going private before ttc again so we don't end up going through more miscarriages if they could be avoided, not least because time's not on our side! E.g. have heard about immune issues with second and subsequent pregnancies and other issues which wouldn't be tested for on the NHS.

Any recommendations for private clinics in Edinburgh or Scotland generally? I've seen recommendations for Dr Regan and Dr Shehata in London and Dr Quenby in Coventry, but nobody in Scotland? Thanks a lot.

Sorry for your losses. I was where you are 5.5 years ago 💔

The clinics in Scotland weren’t helpful in my case. I had six miscarriages over three years, struggled to find the right level of care, then ended up having a two year break because I was so low. Then I decided to go down the IVF route this year, primarily to have ICSI due to male factor issues, and to have embryos tested.

If you can make it happen I’d go to a clinic with a focus on egg quality and recurrent loss. I’d also ensure your husband is seen by a urologist such as Jonathan Ramsay to rule out male factor issues or even a varicocele because, while my OH had “super” sperm as far as the basic test went, his SpermComet test highlighted DNA damage. He also had a hidden infection picked up on in a urine test so was treated with antibiotics before my egg collection. They believe that was the cause of the high DNA damage.

I’m with The Evewell for IVF but consulted with Dr Gorgy regarding immunes as I could speak to him sooner than Dr Shehata. I’m not suggesting IVF is the way to go, and both of their clinics offer other options, but perhaps have a consultation with Gorgy and/or Shehata and see where it takes you? In your case I think it’s important to gather information and undergo further testing.

You could try and get a referral to Siobhan Quenby but Lothian health board rejected mine and I couldn’t get a private appointment directly. Broke my heart at the time but you might have better luck as that was two year ago 💛

Hi MyEasterEggs - can you tell me what happened with the referral from Lothian to professor Quenby? I am pursuing that at the moment on the advice of my obstetrician (who said they couldn't actually make that referral) so I have been trying through my GP since March/April. Just got a call from Coventry saying they have the referral and I am on the list, but now they have said they need the funding GGC health board, but my GP's basically said that's political and won't tell me anything more about the process that's supposed to go though. I am literally at my wit's end. I'm so frustrated and sad. No-one seems to care. You're just a cog in the machine and I spend so long giving them the benefit of the doubt only to find out nothing has moved forward. It's like they are the gatekeepers to the answers and they just won't let me in.

I had the same problem with GGC health board after asking for referral to Tommy’s. They won’t give funding. I made a complaint and they wrote a poor response. The ombudsman did side with me but in the midst of it all I became pregnant and dropped the issue not wanting the stress at a delicate time.
