been trying for a second child for over a year have now been found to have a hydrosalpinx on the left side. Aside from an under active thyroid and factor v lieden everything else is working ok. I am ovulating from my right ovary it seems as there was no blockages etc. Been referred to gynae through my gp and they’ve said as a couple we’ll have to have tests including bloods for me and semen analysis for him. We will also have to have chlamydia tests. All this seems so pointless though when the obvious problem is the blocked tube? Surely I should just be having this taken out and try after? Nothing has changed except the blockage since my first pregnancy 3 years ago. Why do we need to have all these tests? We’ve also been told any fertility treatment we need we will have to pay for. Does anyone know if this would mean I’d have to pay for the actual operation to remove the tube?
sorry for all the questions but I’m so confused and assumed it would be an op and I’d be on my way :(

So the hydrosalpinx will be causing excess fluid and embryos need a very dry environment to adhere to the uterine wall in order to implant. My understanding is the ovaries are pretty good at knowing if there is a tube issue, so I've heard that if one tube is removed the ovary on the other side tends to be the one that releases an egg. But even with that happening the embryo is unlikely to implant given the fluid coming from the other tube, so it's highly likely the tube needs to come out.

I'm not sure what would be provided on the NHS if you've already got a child. Maybe you could call the reception and enquire as to whether the surgery might be covered and try and gauge what the waiting list is like. Then take the decision whether to go through their testing process or consider private, you'd need to consider your age in the decision making.

Thanks so much for replying. Since I posted that message I’ve managed to have a chat with my gp and they’ve answered some of my questions. Im going to have the tests requested and have a consultation with the fertility team and go from there as to what we can do and how much we would be looking at.
