How many appointments for fertility/IVF does partner need to attend?

Hello,

DH and I are in the process of trying to decide on a fertility clinic to be referred to on the NHS. It's the first time we are going through this process and don't have any children. The NHS referrals have provided us with 6 options and we are just trying to work out which one to go with.

My DH is a teacher so won't always be as easy for him to attend appointments as it will for me, so we are wondering roughly how many appointments he will need to physically be at, in order to help us decide.

One clinic is close (ish) to his work but the referrals say 9/10 patient receive treatment in 52 weeks, but another says 9/10 patient receive treatment in 52 weeks, which is obviously preferable but logistically not the best option.

I've read some people say their partner attended appointments via Zoom, which would be good for those where they are not physically needed but want to know/understand what is going on.

We have already done SA and had US with the doctors, do they do this all again when you are referred?

I know everyone's journey/treatment is different but assuming IVF is an option for us, roughly how many appointments would he need to be at for the first round? I've tried to find the answer online but guess there is no definite answer and will depend on our circumstances and what comes back when various tests are carried out.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

My DH only went on transfer day to give his sample.... he didn't come to any scans or transfers

(I know some women like their partner there and to help them feel involved etc but honestly i don't really get it - sat around in waiting rooms several days a week and then 10 mins with a wand up your wotsjts counting follicles - I didn't need my husband to hold my hand for that)

@toooldtodate ah really? that's good to know. He wants to be there but I would rather not delay the process for months on end just for that convenience, knowing it is already going to be a long road.

At the moment I feel fine about going on my own but to be honest not all that sure what it all involves yet other than what I've managed to read online.

Thanks for the info 😊

We had 2 appointments before we started each cycle of IVF- one with the doctor and one with a nurse. The clinic said we both had to attend these appointments.

Mr Dh didn't come to scans with me, but was there for egg collection and transfers.

Thank you @ivf2022 - I'm not sure where our journey will take us but just want to try and be as prepared as possible in case we do end up being eligible for it.

There are currently no appointments at any of the clinics we were given the option of, so I have selected the best one for my own transport there and back and will hope to hear back from them soon. The message said if I don't hear back from them by 4th Nov, I am able to given them a call to chase it up (4th Nov!!!). Preparing for a very long road ahead.

In the meantime I have ordered a home progesterone test as I'm pretty sure the dr's never tested this, as they didn't plan my blood work appointment according to my cycle. If it can even give me a slight indication if that might be the (or part of the) problem, I can at least try and get a head start on that part.

Wishing you all the very best on your journey!
