Low amh how is it down the line?

Hope this is ok to post here.

Last year I had some hormonal blood tests and they found low AMH for my age (29). I'm currently looking into egg freezing, but I've worried myself a lot with premature menopause.
They then in further tests found ovarian cysts which I underwent surgery for and found mild endo, and was told it would be difficult to get pregnant naturally and not to wait. Im in a relationship but it's new, and neither of us are ready to go down that path so doctors who keep telling me not to wait is stressful!

I wanted to ask those who were told they had low AMH has anyone gone through early menopause or are you still having periods if it was years ago you were told? Did you re test and find it dropped quickly or stayed low but the same? My mum went through menopause at 53 so not something I expected and being a hypochondriac it's on my mind a lot on top of the whole fertility worries and running out of eggs.

Thank you!

As you say low amh and not severly low etc, I'm guessing it's not as bad as mine!

I had amh of 1.4 pmol at age 31, 0.8pmol at age 34.

Almost 36 now and haven't been tested again but imagine it's still dropped a low further. Still having periods & ovulating but they've been irregular for a good few years (I came off the pill at 31 just before getting tested for the first amh so no idea if it's related to this or if I would always have been irregular! Was on the pill since 17 and didn't track periods then!)

I expect you've got a while still if your numbers are a lot higher than mine...

I'd definitely freeze some eggs asap if you can though as I wish I'd done that sooner.

Thanks so much for your reply, it's a horrible situation but comforts me to hear of other people in the same situation as it feels lonely in real life.

Mine is higher than yours but not by loads, pmol of 4 age 29. I'm looking into egg freezing now but it's slightly complicated by needing more ovarian cyst surgery which can decrease things further.

That's reassuring to hear thank you. Have you been trying for children since you had your amh tested at 31? Have you been told of how it will impact your fertility at all? Egg freezing will give me some peace of mind I think but I'm worried because of the amh I'll have to do a few cycles as I won't get many eggs

No, sadly I've not been trying since 31! I just went for the checks then but as I'd literally only been off the pill a month or so they said that could have affected my AMH reading and to come back again in a few months. I never did. Nor did I properly look into what this reading meant. I didn't realise HOW low it was until I was actually in a position to consider EF at 34. I've done quite few cycles and usually only managed to get 1 or 2 eggs I'm afraid...but this mainly depends on your AFC (antrafollicle count) which they look at when you have an ultrasound and this is counting the number of follicles you have growing at that stage. This is pretty indicative of how you'll respond to EF. It changes every cycle but mine have between 1-7 (7 being very high for my AMH but they didn't all grow- that cycle I had 5 good follicles growing but my clinic (imo) messed up the egg collection and I didn't get any eggs... So AFC and AMH basically both relate to how likely you are to respond to IVF only. AMH obv gives a bit of an indication as to how long you'll be fertile as it's how many eggs you have left but there's no real statistics on how an AMH of X means you'll be fertile for Y number of years.

NEITHER of these things (unless they're 0!) mean anything about how likely it is for you to get pregnant though as you only need 1 and ofc age is the biggest factor in this. You're young so your eggs should be good. I don't know how the cysts and endo otherwise might affect your fertility though...

And I've been trying to get pregnant naturally for only about 4 months .. and doing some cycles of egg freezing in between a "trying to get pregnant cycle". Long story as to why my partner isn't keen to go straight to IVF but I wanted to finish off my 3 cycle package anyway...

Interesting question and I'd be curious to hear experiences too.

My AMH was low at 30 (only slightly higher than yours at 6.2pmol). I hope it's encouraging to hear that 2 weeks after I got that result I was pregnant, and when she was 7 months old I got pregnant again on our first try. There are lots of studies which show that low AMH has no bearing on natural conception as long as you are ovulating one normal egg a month (though of course low AMH is likely to = poor response to IVF/ egg freezing)

I'm 33 now and have no plans for more children but plan to get my AMH retested when I finish breastfeeding for curiosity purposes / as a possible indication of whether I might expect early menopause... happy to report back!

acaciabluebell · 17/08/2022 13:55

My AMH is currently 6.6pmol and I'm 26, turning 27 soon. I asked my fertility doctor and she basically said there is no way to predict menopause, the main predictor is normally the age your mother goes into menopause (mine is 45 and not in menopause yet). She did tell me to keep an eye out for my cycles and if they start to become irregular it could be a warning sign. She said maybe in the next 10 years I might start to see a change. Is your FSH also high? As that could be another important indicator.

Just keep in mind though, low AMH doesn't affect your chances of natural conception. Most of us on this page already have infertility, meaning we have already tried to conceive for more than 1 year. But loads of people have low AMH without knowing it, and conceive easily and without needing any help. It's one of those things that people aren't usually aware of until they are seeking fertility help. Perhaps it might be a good idea to check your follicle count every 6 months/year or so to have an idea of how things are progressing. The follicle count is more important than the AMH value.

Thank you so much for the replies, they have really helped me to read. It's so easy to get carried away with worry.

You're totally right about so many people walking around not knowing their amh and it never affecting them, I guess as mine was a coincidental finding it might be that I've spent so much time worrying for nothing as I haven't tried to get pregnant yet, aiming to try next year maybe.

My FSH was normal and everything else was, didn't have a follicle count or at least I don't know it because they were scanning me about the cyst so didn't mention AFC but I will ask for that at my next appointment. Thank you so much, it would be great to report back! It's reassuring to feel hear both positive stories and also know I'm not alone in this :)

Fellow low AMH-er here. Low AMH in itself isn't indicative you will have an early menopause. It could have always been low rather than be reducing at a faster rate than normal (if that makes sense). Repeat testing every year or so is the only way for you to track what's happening, but again, this can fluctuate and may not give you any answers. As pp said, if your mother went through menopause at a normal age it's likely you will too. We had IVF when I was 31 after 18 months unsuccessful TTC and we're lucky to have our daughter from our first round.

Rosiestraws · 18/08/2022 18:28

@cinnamonrolls5

That would be great if you do get your AMH tested again and report back. I'm too scared to do this ha but I'll do so if/ when I've had a baby as ttc atm 🙈🤞🏼🤞🏼

ffiffi123 · 19/08/2022 10:09

My AMH was 0.8 a few month ago when I was going through tests, I have one daughter I had at 33 I'm 37 now Confused we've stopped trying, I actually don't think I ovulate every month.

I also have a polyp which I'm hoping they'll remove around Christmas time!

Husband has more than adequate sperm count (50 mil Shock) so who knows! It only takes 1 egg!

My specialist nurse just said because my periods are still regular it's doubtful I'm in early peri menopause/menopause.

ffiffi123 · 19/08/2022 10:13

Also FSH was 11 then as high as 19 in one cycle, I have hormonal epilepsy though so not sure if that affects everything.

Anyone who is Low AMH, low means, 0.5pmol/l and is older than 42 or 43 yrs old, trying to conceive or had been successful...?
Pls share your success story...😚

Coming back to update in case anyone finds this and wonders!

I am now 36, nearly 37. It has been almost 6 years to the day since my first AMH test result. My AMH is now 1.87pmol, so very low, but of course so was the 6.2 at 30. My FSH was 11.6 on day 2 of my cycle.

We are thinking about trying for a third baby. It has been quite some time since #2 so I have zero expectations but I do know now that my AMH is only part of the puzzle.

orzo15 · 16/11/2025 18:26

Interesting to see this updated! Shortly after my post, I had my level retested (age 30) and it was 1.6 pmol, terribly low. I got pregnant naturally 3 months later, which ended in a mmc. Then a year after that (but not a year of trying, i took a break) i got pregnant again on the 5th cycle of trying. I now have a 15 month old. Still breastfeeding and still no periods, so not sure what they will be like when they return

That’s great, congratulations on your 15 month old. Hopefully our stories will reassure someone else who has had similar news!

MGee123 · 18/11/2025 23:04

Interesting to read your updates. Congratulations on your 15 month old! I’ll add my update if you don’t mind, as might be relevant for people coming across this topic. Conceived first via IVF after 18-24 months TTC unsuccessfully with no issues on testing other than low AMH (6 at age 30). Didn’t bother retesting AMH again but had recurrent rounds of IVF several years later to try and have a second, all unsuccessful. Stopped all treatment and adjusted to the idea of life as a 3. 6 months later I conceived naturally twice in 4 months. The first sadly ended in miscarriage at 10 weeks, the second (conceived almost straight away) I carried successfully to term and has completed our family. I’m now in that super irritating group of ‘it happened when we stopped trying…’

CandidStork · 28/02/2026 23:18

In case it helps anyone reading as many threads as I did when I found out - I had incredibly low amh, 0.4 at 34. AFC 1-2 each month. We’d been trying for 2 years at that point and decided to go for natural modified IVF with Create, after being told by another clinic we had <5% chance of success and I likely wouldn’t respond but they could try “throwing everything at it”. Create felt like a much better fit for our circumstances but still like a very long shot. We did 3 collections and only ended up with one day 3 embryo, miraculously that one and only embryo implanted and we now have our son. Highly recommend Create, the medical care and level of monitoring was truly excellent.
