Blood thinning jabs - any tips

Hi All, I’ve got my 5th transfer on Thursday, I’ve been prescribed blood thinning jabs for the first time they called it clexane but the actual prescription is Arovi. Just taken my first one and it really blimin hurt (during & after) and bruised (in addition to the headache). I’m usually fine with jabs so thought I’d just ask if anyone has any tips or tricks to make it better?

Hello, I have had these jabs - started from about 20ish weeks when pregnant right into my poor tummy daily up until 6 weeks after my C-section and then had another round after my ectopic pregnancy surgery in November, so lots of experience!

My way of tackling them was to get a fairly good pinch of tummy and to hold it tight. Then I would actually inject very very slowly. So point the tip into your tummy that you’re firmly squeezing and once’s it’s into the skin, push down very gently until the whole needy is inside. Then slowly slowly press the fluid in and keep pinching. Sometimes once I’d started to push the fluid in I would speed up pressing it in but I’d keep pinching my tummy and not let go straight away as I found that helps pain wise.

Once I’d done it this way a few times I kind of got the hang of it and it started to hurt much less - going in quickly to get it ‘over and done with’ caused more pain for me.

Alternate between sides of your tummy. I ended up bruised on each side and sometimes they bled a little but mostly no blood and sometimes could do it more or less pain free.

Good luck!

@Zinniaa gosh, that’s a long time to have taken them for! With a pregnant belly too 😳Thank you so much for the tips, I really appreciate them. Will be going extra, EXTRA slow tomorrow 👍

@Agapanthus13 I used to take Clexane but have recently been prescribed fragmin and another one too that are way more painful. Wondered if I was imagining it then found some Clexane left over and the difference was unbelievable! We need to point this out to our doctors actually so they are aware as these things make a big difference to our mental health!!

Sorry I've no practical tips. Best of luck with the transfer x

Hi @Janefx40 do you mean the fragmin is less painful? Just asking incase of future prescription!! I did ask about taking aspirin but was told the jab are much better (I keep telling myself whilst in pain doing them 🤣

@Agapanthus13 sorry no the fragmin is way worse than the Clexane. So is the other brand. Clexane is the best one I found. I take aspirin too !

I was on Clexane for 16 weeks and agree it's not much fun! My tips - make sure the tip of the needle is dry before you insert it. No idea why but that burned less. Don't inject around your tummy/belly button - go wider out and grab some skin from nearer to your waist (or love handles if you have them hehe) or even in your thigh. Don't rub the skin afterwards either. Good luck!
