Miscarriage while waiting for IVF

Has anyone else been in this position? We were waiting for our IVF funding and were overjoyed to somehow fall naturally pregnant. Just found out that despite symptoms, it is unviable and probably stopped developing very early on. We went for a private scan and haven't seen anyone within the NHS yet. I'm broken by the loss and by the additional fact that if I need any medical intervention now, our IVF referral will be put back another 2 years+. It feels so cruel.

I'm so so sorry for you loss 💐💐
Try to focus on getting through the next few weeks with your partner emotionally and physically.

Just for some reassurance when looking ahead at starting IVF if that is still your plan, I fell pregnant the month before we were due to start IVF too, but sadly it ended in a TMFR at 14 weeks.
Our clinic asked us to repeat a couple of scans in the months that followed, looking to see my uterus was completely healed and no scaring ect from needing surgery. They suggested we try naturally during this time, but didn't hold back our NHS funding.
We started IVF about 5-6 months after our loss.
If it's all been approved, no one should be going to go back to the commissioning group and having it taken away due to you suffering such trauma.
Might be worth a call to your clinic to discuss with their clinical lead for reassurance.

Sending you all the best wishes for the challenging weeks ahead.

I’m so sorry for your loss Flowers I’m in a similar position, though I was still waiting for the consultant appointment to confirm NHS IVF was the next step when I found out I was pregnant. I had the private scan Monday, NHS scan Wednesday and then started bleeding Thursday. I’m going for a second NHS scan on Wednesday which I guess will now be to confirm that all the tissue has passed. I’m sorry I don’t have any advice, it’s so awfully unfair xx

I'm so sorry OP

In my experience yes if the miscarriage goes on your medical records then the IVF clock is reset if you like and you'll go back on the wait list - happened to me and several friends - some of them then lost the funding as they were then past the age cut off

When I got pregnant naturally the week I was due to start NHS IVF the nurse on the phone even advised me not to notify the fertility clinic etc until after I'd had a viability scan

If you are able I would do the miscarriage naturally at home if you are only in the early stages of pregnancy x

Sorry to read your news. My friend had an ectopic when very close to starting ivf. Her treatment was able to go ahead. I would try and find out what the policy is for where you live.

I agree with a pp, if you can it might be better to miscarry naturally and not mention it. I guess it depends on how far along you are?

I'm currently in the process of a missed miscarriage from ivf (private as I already have a dc). Had a scan a couple of weeks ago when there was a heartbeat (measuring small though) then last week (8 wks +3) there wasn't. Went to EPU next day and they scanned and said I have to come back a week later for a second nhs scan and then they'll give me the tablets to hopefully bring on the actual Miscarriage. I've had 3 miscarriages before, all before 6 weeks, and they all started pretty quickly on their own, so it's been quite different this time.

Thanks so much for all your responses and so sorry that so many of you are going through or have gone through such a terrible thing ☹️ I have looked at my CCG policy but it's not clear for this situation. I'm only 7 weeks so I'm going to try and err on the side of caution and keep quiet as long as things progress naturally. I've had some brown spotting which is now getting heavier and redder, as well as worse cramps, so think my body has caught on to what's happening.

@Nora11 it does sound like your body is starting the process. After you'll need to do a pregnancy test(s) to check it goes to completely negative. If you have any complications, you will have to go to hospital. It's not worth getting ill over or causing complications for. It is a positive that your body was able to become pregnant. Doesn't take any of the hurt away though.

Hope you’re doing OK. I commented above that the same thing happened to me last week. I phoned the infertility department at the hospital today and they said that as I’d not directly informed them I was pregnant my case is still open so I will still get the appointment with the consultant, though obviously they might still decline to treat me at that point. It’s the same hospital I had registered with for maternity services and the scanning unit is part of their service (though at a different hospital in the same trust), so it may not be flagged to them even if you did need to get in touch with anyone (which hopefully you won’t).

Nora11 · 19/07/2022 21:18

@CharlotteYorkMacDougal thank you, I'm not doing too bad considering and hope you are okay too. I really hope your consultant appointment goes well and they don't decline you 🤞

I haven't needed to tell anyone yet and I think I'm through the worst of it now 🤞 but it's good to know that if I do need to, it won't be a definite no to the IVF maybe.

@seven201 you are so right, if at any point I'm even a little worried I will contact the EPU straight away as my health is most important. So far I've had significant bleeding and some quite bad cramps, but not heavy or painful enough to be a concern. I'm going to book another private scan to check everything has passed correctly later on as I'm paranoid about that!

I was waiting my period on 25th of May this year to start my NHS funding IVF when on 26th I found that I am pregnant( naturaly). I send the email to the hospital straight away, but unfortunately everything goes down on next week., so I send email again. They wanted me to have one normal cycle and of beginning of this month we started the treatment. Yesterday we transferred 2 embryo back , so fingers crossed 🤞

ButterflyGal · 28/07/2022 22:17

I had an ectopic then had IVF 6 months later (now ds 2yrs). I didn’t hide it from the clinic and they were fine with it. I suspect it depends on your local services. But it’s not a definite no in any case.

Hello - I hope you don’t mind me dropping into this chat. I’m a freelance journalist for national newspapers/magazines and I’m looking into whether couples are having their NHS funding taken away/going back to the start of the waiting list if they get pregnant and then miscarry before their IVF appointment. Would anyone be happy to share their story - can be anonymous if you’d prefer. I’d love to hear from you - these are important stories. Please pass on. Thank you so much. X
