Drastic change in AMH but normal AFC

Three years ago at 33 my AMH was 22. I got it tested after a suboptimal IVF cycle (that ended up being cancelled), and it’s now 6. My antral follicle count was c. 17 to 20 for this cycle, and has consistently been around 15 to 20 in the last two years, so there seems to be a discordance between the two.

I’m absolutely gutted, and also shocked. My Dr. seemed quite surprised as well. Am I doomed? Can anyone give me insights or hope? Have been in tears all afternoon.

To have an AMH of 6 and an AFC of 15-20 makes me wonder if there was an error in the lab where they did the blood test. I would ask to have it tested again.

There is evidence that low vitamin D can artificially suppress AMH. The evidence isn't water tight, but anecdotally my AMH was 13.8 when I first tested it in October 2020 and hadn't been taking any supplements, and then it was 23.4 in February 2022 after I'd been taking 50-75ug of vitamin D for over a year, along with other supplements like CoQ10. My vitamin D when tested in February was in the middle of the upper range, it wasn't too high, so I am sure I was deficient when my AMH was first tested. So this is totally anecdotal but personally I think the vitamin D definitely helped my AMH levels.

@Mouseorchestra7 yes that doesn't sound right, but good news that your AFC is still high that's way more important than your AMH. I have low AMH of 1.3 but I also only have 4 follicles in total (I'm 35) so that kind of makes sense. I wouldn't worry but I would get retested - I do believe the time of the month you test makes a difference too.

Also I follow a fertility account on insta and there's loads of info about AMH on here - instagram.com/thefertilitydetective?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Thank you, @kennetrose and @Dbop100 belatedly for your responses.

@kennetrose That’s interesting to note about Vit D and have read that. I know I was very deficient in Vitamin D for years, but have been supplementing since January and finally got my levels up to just about optimal about a month before my test. Crazy that your Vit D leapt up so much!

@Dbop100 I think you are right about the time of the month. This test was taken about 34 hours after I’d taken a trigger after a cancelled cycle of IVF so I wonder if that could have impacted. I’m not going to test again for the time being and just plough ahead with my next cycle. If anything, it might help to reset my expectations. Did you do IVF?
