Myoinositol - did it work for you?

Hi all - has anyone had a good experience with myoinositol and irregular periods/other symptoms of PCOS?

I've had PCOS since I was a teenager. Started taking myoinositol last October as my cycles seemed to be getting longer and longer (100 days +) a while after stopping the pill. There were so many rave reviews across all different brands so I had fairly high hopes. But since then I haven't seen any signs that it's regulating my cycle. Now on CD95 with no hint of a period coming.

Has anyone tried it? How long did it take to have an effect? Before I went on it I was losing a lot of hair, and that happily seems to have completely settled, but perhaps that would have happened a while after coming off the pill anyway.

Feel a bit naïve that I thought this could really sort things out Blush

How much are you taking? The dose for PCOS is supposed to be 4g, often split into two. Also might be worth discussing if you can try Metformin with your GP, sometimes just Myo inositol alone is not enough - they can be taken together. Sorry I can't remember exactly how long it took to regulate my periods - I've been on both Myo and Metformin together for about 5 years.

Thanks, @IamnotwhouthinkIam. I've been taking 4g in one go first thing in the morning. I spoke to my GP the other day about the lack of a period since November and was hoping maybe we could start to think about medication, but she wasn't that concerned - she said the fact I'm having periods at all means I'm ovulating (not sure about that!) so to just carry on. Perhaps I'll give it another few weeks and try again - if I hit 4 months without a period I'd hope she might reconsider?

It is worth trying your GP again imo. As far as I know Metformin is a commonplace, relatively cheap and pretty safe drug (it often has unpleasant gastrointestinal side effects though so be warned), but obviously some GP's are more willing to prescribe meds than others. I think I was first prescribed it by an Endocrinologist though (specialising in PCOS) - so if your GP doesn't feel comfortable prescribing it themselves, I would hope they might be willing to refer you to a specialist especially since you have been diagnosed already but your symptoms are worsening (although obviously there might be a long waiting list to see someone).

Second Metformin and Myoinositol.

I’m also taking other supplements based on recommendations from a fertility nutritionist and some are listed here:

I think it’s important to get vitamin levels checked before supplementing, if you can. Maybe even chat with a nutritionist as our needs are all different.

My cycle used to be really long, approx 90 days, and is now an avg 32-38 days. So this protocol did something.

You really shouldn’t be going longer than 2.5-3 months without a period and your doctor should prescribe you progesterone to induce a bleed after that time. I’d challenge them again!

I’ve been taking myoinositol since I came off the mirena so I don’t know what impact it’s having comparatively but as I’m also temping I have seen that I ovulated ten days ago so waiting for my first period now - day 100 today! Doctors would have had me take progesterone but as I knew I’d ovulated were waiting a bit longer to see it I bleed on my own and I’m pretty sure I will. Next cycle will tell a tale for me about myoinositol if the cycle is shorter.

They say it takes 6 months for optimal results so I wouldn’t give up yet!

I highly recommend LH strips for testing ovulating and temping. I’ve found the data really helps me make sense of everything.
