Makeup/perfume/etc before and after frozen embryo transfer

Has anyone had their consultant tell them to avoid anything at all with chemicals, even makeup, when doing frozen embryo transfer cycle? If so, did they tell you to avoid leading up to or just day of/after ET?

Also, anyone worn these things as usual and had successful FET? I'm sure many have as surely every baby born from an FET the mum didn't totally where no cosmetics. I'm just struggling as I want to do every little thing I can so avoided them last cycle, but this cycle leading up its depressing me sometimes to not have any makeup at all. So weighing mental health versus if it actually makes any difference before the transfer or if its just after, etc.

It’s the day of embryo transfer. Embryo will be exposed momentarily and don’t want it harmed by chemicals. I wouldn’t wear perfume in the days leading up to it or nail varnish - so things that are super pungent that I’d have to remove but it’s fine to wear makeup in the days before it. I’d remove makeup the night before then shower the morning of transfer with no shower gel and not put on deodorant or any makeup.

Mine asked me not to wear deodorant or perfume for EC and transfer. I didn’t really question it, I just followed their instructions. I don’t think they said anything about makeup but I likely wouldn’t have bothered with it on those days anyway. It was just for those days though, the rest of the time I was carrying on as usual and I don’t go to the office without makeup or deodorant on.

It's the same before any medical procedure, no deodorant, no perfume, no moisturiser. It's generally because they can interfere with monitoring equipment. If for any reason they need to apply stickers for ECG monitoring etc. in an emergency or if you're having sedation the residue left behind can stop them sticking to the skin correctly.

I’ve been avoiding all this stuff since ttc (anything with ‘fragrance (parfum)’ in contains phthalates which are endocrine disruptors) so it’s a non-issue for me.

thanks for replies

I know that its advised for EC and I understand its standard for surgery. I was specifically asking about FET, and the days before and after (not of)!

@tulipsandsnow I can’t speak as to perfume or nail varnish as I didn’t wear them at all during IVF due to the strong chemicals but I wear foundation and other makeup up to the day before FET (done a few!) but nothing the day of FET and make sure to shower before it so no residue. I don’t see why you can’t wear makeup the day after FET.

Did your consultant specifically say for the whole embryo transfer cycle and if so what was his reasoning? Did you misunderstand and he just meant day of FET/day before?

I was to not wear makeup and perfume only on transfer day. They never mentioned anything about the days after and before.

AliceAbsolum · 07/02/2022 12:59

I think it's just on transfer day

Vslightlystressy · 07/02/2022 15:28

I was told not day of transfer as it can have an adverse impact.

I had a successful FET and the guidance is just for the day no make up perfume nail varnish no deodorant basically just have a shower and show up u can wear all those things to the lead up it’s fine i wore perfume deodorant etc the day before and the day after transfer xxx

Hi
I am going for FET next week. I will appreciate any advice prior to transfer day about pre FET and post FET check list or dos and don't.

Feeling bit concern and conscious.

Missmarymack2 · 11/10/2024 20:31

I wasn’t told not to wear make up. And I did wear make up. I don’t wear nail varnish or perfume anyway .

naomimn · 11/10/2024 21:46

This is something I'm confused about. I was told no make up, perfume, but also no jewellery (because of dirt / chemicals that can be in it) for egg collection. Yet the embryologist was wearing a necklace and the nurse wearing some earrings.

LanaAus · 15/10/2024 10:11

It’s just because strong smells can damage the embryo. You’re fine to wear them before and after transfer. I still wear make up on the transfer day just nothing that is perfumed.

Goldpanther · 17/10/2024 10:50

I was told no perfume and no fancy nails. Strong smells can damage the embryo, and acrylic nails can affect the finger monitor you have to wear for EC.
