Disappointing AMH Results - Confused and Need Advice!

Hey Everyone,

I'm 35 TTC for 13 months. I've just started on the infertility journey and I really need advice and support.

I've just had a private AMH test done, and they said my result was pretty low. She said they like to see a 10 and I was a 4... :-(
Sperm test results came back really good. So it's looking like I'm the problem.

Next step is a scan - I don't know even know what that's looking at, but I've been told I don't have much time to waste, so IVF is looking probable.

I looked up the success rates of IVF, and with my AMH scores, its even lower. Does this mean I'm never going to have a child? :-(

Hi, I'm sorry the AMH result was a shock. The scan will look at the number of follicles you have on each ovary, which is a proxy for the number of eggs you might be expected to produce in a round of IVF stimulation. The scan is generally a better indication of what's going on than your AMH result - it's possible to have a relatively low AMH level but a decent amount of follicles. And even if your follicle count is relatively low, there are clinics they specialise in low AMH that can offer mild or natural IVF.

I'd also read It Starts with an Egg and look at the vitamin recommendations - lots of women have had success with adding in things like a higher dose of vitamin D, ubiquinol, a really good multivitamin and DHEA, if it's likely to help in the circumstances.

Honestly, all is not lost.

I had a baby on my first round of ivf aged 36 when my amh was 7 point something.

2 years later when I went back to get my amh tested after following the advice in it starts with the egg, my amh had gone up to 16. It's just one measure really. It's definitely worth doing some research and trying to improve your egg quality and amh, but at 35 you're still really young in ivf terms so you have every chance of a successful round of you just crack on with it.

I was in your position age 34- my amh was 2.7 - so terrible!!!

However - studies show that low amh has NO impact on natural conception - look it up. Conceiving Is all about egg quality- amh only measures quantity and you only naturally release one egg per month anyway.

After I got this result I got pregnant naturally immediately. Sadly it didn’t work out. However I then did ivf which worked first time- so Ivf can work with low amh even though you might get fewer eggs.

When the Ivf baby was 8 months old and my period came back I thought I’d better get the heck on with trying for a sibling- I’d been given the “running out of time” story too. I expected it to take years or be impossible…

Within 4 weeks I was staring at a positive pregnancy test - it was my first cycle after finishing breastfeeding. I now have 2 children with 16 months between them.

Moral of the story - all is absolutely not lost.

@Girlanon I can totally understand how you feel as I had exact same feeling when I found out my AMH level. I was crying my eyes out and have the same thoughts as you do! I am 35 aswell, TTC for 2.5 years. My low AMH mainly due to endometriosis/ ovarian cyst and hopefully will be able start ivf soon. (Had loads of delay due to covid and surgery) I was reading loads of articles, going a bit crazy trying to find some positive stories to give myself some hope. As the others have said, AMH doesn’t show the quality of your eggs, hopefully we will both be lucky and have some good eggs still. Xx

Lots of success stories on here from IVF with a similar or lower AMH!

Hi,
Please don't give up hope! Your AMH is not the worst ... I am on a FB group and some women are 0.0 numbers and still trying and getting results.
I have low AMH ... it was 7 when I had my first IVF baby in 2017 and then was 5.2 when I had my second IVF baby in 2019. We are trying for a third and before starting, I began taking supplements such as DHEA, CoQ10 etc and my AMH is still measuring 5 ... which I believe is a result of taking supplements.
Good luck x

I had success and my AMH was 1.0 so it's not impossible. AMH is just one factor and it needs to be looked at in conjunction with follicle count.

I have had two children with very low amh , much lower than yours and hardly any follicles. I have got pregnant 6x in 2 years but had mcs too
