Only one follicle - abandon cycle?

Hi all,
apologies I have been posting a lot these days, just going through my first IVF cycle and have lots of questions.
I had scan today after 8 days of stims - there is only one big follicle. There were 3 follicles on the baseline scan. Consultant suggested to abandon this cycle. Have anyone of you had only one follicle and went ahead? Was it successful?
Also I started stims only on 4th day of the cycle because medicines arrived late, consultant said it is ok. I think maybe it was late and the leading follicle may already been recruited by day 4?
In this case it makes sense to abandon this cycle and start new one from day 1 or 2 of bleeding.
I would really appreciate your thoughts and experiences in similar situation, have to take decision in the evening tonight..

Hi @sviri sorry to hear about this it's very upsetting I know. I got 1 follicle on my first round of stims so we switched to IUI, which didn't work, then went straight into a second round of stims on the next cycle. That second round I got 3 follicles, 2 eggs and 1 blast. Sadly that blast didn't take. What's your AFC? Mine is 5 so these low numbers were expected but it still sucked.x

I can understand the disappointment having been in a similar situation.

You need to do what is best for you and it depends on a number of factors.

If it's your first cycle I'd probably postpone in your position, because egg collection is often the most expensive part of a cycle so at this point you have 'only' paid out for the medication (and scans if they are charged separately).

Was it expected that you would only have 3 follicles at the baseline scan?
Some months I had only a few and some months more so with my clinic decided after baseline scan whether to start stims or not. Obviously if you have several consecutive cycles where the AFC is low it may just be your normal, in which case go ahead at that point, and hope for quality over quantity.

It's always a gamble, people with lots of follicles sometimes don't get lots of embryos but I wouldn't have gambled with one follicle right at the start of the IVF journey, unless it hadn't come as a big surprise based on other factors.

I guess if you do go ahead you are going into it without raising your hopes too much and if you do get to transfer it is a bonus, how many times do we hear it only takes one.

Have the clinic given you any steer?

Good luck with your decision.

@Dbop100 thank you for your reply! It is all very sad:(
My AMH is 1.0 so I am not surprised with this number too..

I was in this situation a few weeks ago. I decided to abandon the cycle, because the odds of it working with one egg (if there was even an egg in that follicle) was so low. It is a very personal, and hard, decision though. As background, I have very low AMH, am 41, and have diminished ovarian reserve so we didn't take that decision lightly. I am going to start my 3rd and final round with different drugs in January.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do x

It’s very hard. I did see someone on here in the same predicament who had a baby with that one follicle. I had a situation where my cycle went totally wrong and I’m pregnant. Pm me for more details. We nearly abandoned it. I have very low amh
Understand that you have to consider costs etc though

Could you maybe convert this cycle to IUI or timed intercourse?

Whiskeyandwine · 01/12/2021 18:17

@Scirocco that’s what we did and worked
