Pregnancy After Polyp Removal

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping for a little experience as I'm finding lots of differing information online about pregnancy success after polyp removal.

I've just turned 36 years old and my husband and I have been trying to conceive for 6 years now... I'm terrified of needles and the thought of IVF has given me many sleepless nights, but I finally bit the bullet and was referred to my local infertility clinic for testing.

The staff were really lovely and have given me a small hope that I might not need to go down the IVF route. My transvaginal ultrasound showed what they believe (a second doctor was called in to confirm) is a polyp in my uterus, and my doctor believes this is the cause of my infertility and was confident removal would give me a chance to conceive naturally. Otherwise I'm in good health, have never smoked, taken recreational drugs or been overweight and ovaries were healthy with 38 follicles counted (doctor said 10 is considered adequate so 38 is very good). No problems with husbands semen sample.

I was given the choice of another scan to confirm or straight in with hysteroscopy. As it was the week before my period and my lining was thick and made viewing difficult I opted for the scan first and I can't say I'm looking forwards to a hysteroscopy if they still think a polyp, but it is preferable to IVF.

I'm hoping others have some experience of all this and then going on to have a successful pregnancy. I still just can't get my head around something relatively simple being the possible solution to years of infertility issues and am really scared to hope too much at this point....

I had a poly removed. I was told it could prevent implantation which makes sense.

The hysteroscopy was fine, a bit sore around my abdomen for a few days and took it fairly gently for about a week.

I did need IVF to conceive in the end because of an issue with egg quality but it's definitely worth getting the polyp removed because it could be preventing pregnancy.

Hello @ScottishRach I'm very interested to know how the procedure went and if you were able to conceive after the hysteroscopy? I'm pretty much in the same boat right now. I'm 36 and my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for about 2 years and have had 3 early miscarriages in that time. My US showed a polyp which I have been asked to get removed through a hysteroscopy. But I am curious to know if this will help with a successful pregnancy after. I'm afraid that the polyp may not be the only reason for the failed pregnancies.

@ScottishRach @PinkIsMyFavColour I’m In a similar situation and would like to know what the outcome has been for you.
We have suffered 5 miscarriages over 5yrs and earlier this week the US shown that I may have a large polyp or several little ones in my uterus which makes sense due the the symptoms I have suffered over the yrs (hair loss/pain in leg) never linked them to endo but doing little research it’s given me a light bulb moment. US also shown that a may have PCOS. Things are currently on pause whilst I wait for further scans.
As we have a 14yr ivf would not be possible so hoping to hear that you have successfully convince naturally following removal of your polyps.I know how heart breaking pregnancy loss is.

Hi all. Sorry for taking so long to reply, things have been a long time coming so it's been quite a while since I last visited Mumsnet.

I did end up getting a hysteroscopy..... which found no polyps! Which was a surprise given that one had potentially been seen twice, though the consultants assure me this is perfectly normal given ultrasounds aren't the clearest. The hysteroscopy itself was fine enough, some light cramping but I just watched what was going on on the screen and tried to ignore it. They also took a endrometrial biopsy while they were there. That was painful but shirt lived and all came back clear.

So all back to square one again ☹. I started IVF at the beginning of December, just coming off the norethisterone on Boxing Day and beginning my injections on New Years Eve. With the help of Emla I am managing, and just remember to eat something and drink some fizzy juice after to get my blood pressure back up. As I have lots of follicles I'm on a low dose and generally have felt pretty alright so far, to the point where I'm worrying I'm not doing it right as I don't feel terribly different. My first scan is on the 9th and that will tell me if and how well the injections are working 🤞
