BFN then a BFP a week later?

I got a BFN a week ago after my latest IVF cycle. Called the clinic and was told to stop taking the cyclogest/lubion and that my period would start in a few days. Today with no period having arrived (in the past it's come within 3 days), I took another pregnancy test and got a BFP - a strong line appeared immediately. Called the clinic again and I've got to re-start the cyclogest/lubion and go in for a blood test so they can look at the hCG levels. I can't actually get to the clinic until Friday so I've got a nerve-wracking three days to wait. Could it be late implantation? Has this happened to anyone else with a good outcome? I'm 100% sure that I did both pregnancy tests correctly and I did the first test on the exact day that I was told to by the clinic so it shouldn't have been too early. I'm trying not to get my hopes up and I'm pretty worried that I didn't take any progesterone for 7 days and also that I've been drinking alcohol this week.

Oh wow, the official testing dates are usually quite late, so that is something! Perhaps a mixture of things: late implantation, urine not strong enough, test not very sensitive??

I had quite a late bfp (squintiest of squinters the day after my period was due) but still before official testing date.

Was it a 5 day embryo transferred? How many days post transfer did you get the BFNs, and how many days post transfer was your positive?

I want to say congratulations, but I know you must be worried. I don't know about about progesterone (I've only ever done a natural FET) but I know it is extremely unlikely that drinking alcohol will affect anything. A strong line appearing immediately has got to be a good sign🤞

Hi @curlyblonde was this a fresh transfer of a modified natural FET? if so then your body would have been producing some of its own progesterone and the hcg would have encouraged it to keep being produced from the corpus luteum(s).

If not then it's a bit strange that your period held off for a week without medication.

It sounds like there's a few things that could have happened, firstly you might be very lucky and you're in the tiny percentage of people that test positive after the OTD. And I so hope it's that!

The next option is that it's a late implanter and that it will end up being a chemical. Another option is the test you've done is a dodgy one (that's easy to rule out, just do another test).

The last option I can think of is that it could be an ectopic pregnancy, hcg can rise more slowly in this case.

So I guess at this point it's a cautious congratulations, as unfortunately you'll need to wait and see what the serial hcgs show. I hope it ends up being good news!

They transferred two day 5 blastocysts. I got the BFN on day 12 post embryo transfer - used morning urine as directed by the clinic and also used their pregnancy test. I suspect they think I did the first test wrong but I've done enough of them by now to know what I'm doing! I got the BFP 19 days post transfer - I only did the second test because I was about to ring the clinic and ask what to do about the non-arrival of my period and I thought they'd probably tell me to do another test to be on the safe side. I've been frantically googling and late implantation seems to be connected with miscarriage but hopefully that's not the case here.

@curlyblonde do you have an update?

curlyblonde · 08/11/2021 09:53

The blood tests came back with very low hCG so looks like it was late implantation and then a chemical pregnancy. :-(

I'm sorry @curlyblonde what's your plan now, do you have more embryos?
