Cyclogest

Hi everyone, I wondered if anyone could share their experience on cyclogest for me? I’ve recently had a round of IVF with the agora in Brighton. This was after two miscarriages and then 14 months of being unable to get pregnant.

The cycle went ok and we were very lucky to find ourselves pregnant. I continued taking the cyclogest twice a day until we got to our 8 week scan. I was absolutely terrified in the scan having previously had a MMC but we were lucky to have a heartbeat and the midwife said to continue cyclogest until I ran out (which was in 2 days time).

2 days after stopping cyclogest (so at 8 weeks 4 days) I started to experience what I could only describe as electrical waves up my back. The following day I started bleeding and lost the baby. When I had my follow up appointment the doctor skimmed over cyclogest (seemed to insinuate it is only useful at the being of pregnancy) but I can’t understand why I wasn’t kept on it longer, especially when I have a history of miscarriage.

Does anyone have a similar experience? We are paying for further tests in a couple of weeks and the baby has been sent for testing but I have a feeling everything will come back fine.

Oh OP, I am so sorry to hear that. Heartbreaking.

I know clinics all do different things but mine suggests carrying on with cyclogest until 12 weeks but I have heard of clinics that stop at 10, 8 and even 6 weeks.

You could try a different clinic if yours doesn’t listen to your concerns but i appreciate that means you sometimes have to pay for investigations multiple times.

I did hear that the NHS pays for miscarriage assistance after three losses?

Fingers crossed for you for your next pregnancy. Xxx

Hi @Mandaf1988 Sorry to hear about your loss ☹️

My clinic has said to continue with Cyclogest till 12 weeks and I know other women who have been on cyclogest (with previous miscarriages) who were also advised to continue till 12 weeks, so I don’t understand why they asked you to stop that early.

I’m sorry to hear what happened, OP. I produce very little progesterone and have been told I’ll need to be on it until I’m 12 weeks pregnant when the uterus takes over. But not everyone is, I’ve seen some people take it for 8 weeks, not sure why the difference.

@Mandaf1988 I am so sorry for your losses. I know it is beyond heartbreaking and I’m sorry you’ve had to go through this three times, it’s horrific.

My clinic also stop cyclogest at 8 weeks for fresh cycles. The rationale is that by that time the placenta and corpus luteum should be producing enough of its own progesterone to support the rest of the pregnancy.

If you have a medicated FET next time, you will likely be on cyclogest for 12 weeks as the body doesn’t produce a corpus luteum in medicated frozen cycles so you need the progesterone a bit longer anyway and with a history of miscarriage you could even ask this to be extended to 16 weeks.

As PP has said, after three miscarriages you should be entitled to free blood tests to check for things like blood clotting issues and you could also consider having a karyotype for you and your partner as well if you wanted.
If you haven’t spoken to them already, The Miscarriage Association or Tommy’s will be able to give you more information on tests and anything else you need help with.

I hope you get the answers you need and my heart goes out to you at this truly horrible time. xx

I'm so sorry 💐
I hope you're managing the best you can 💐
I've had 1 natural early miscarriage, 1 IVF embryo fail to implant, and 1 IVF embryo not make it to week 7.
My clinic will keep me on injectable progesterone (Lubion) and Cyclogest until week 12 if I get that far with our frozen embryo.
I had the thrombophilia screening for recurrent miscarriage last week and am waiting for the results to see if anything comes up. I paid for it through my IVF clinic and it cost £118 if that's any help.

@Mandaf1988 I'm so sorry to hear that. I am under the same clinic as you & when I had my first round in August I was told if my test was positive I would have to take the cyclogest until I was 12 weeks. Unfortunately our cycle failed. We are just starting another round but they didn't send any out to me this time as I had 4 boxes left over but said If I needed them (test positive) they would send more

Sorry to hear what’s happened but I was told to take them until 12 or 14 weeks carnt remember which but you should certainly not stop at 8
Cyclogest is used to keep a pregnacy there I was told x

I have a history of recurrent mmc and took until 16 weeks this time. I have an immune issue and my body actually attacks progesterone production so without support my levels are dire.
I’m very sorry for your loss my dear, it’s really soul destroying to get so far and then suffer a loss. Have you had the embryos tested after loss? For various reasons mine weren’t but it helps to know if it’s chromosome issues or if they were normal that points to something else potentially. 8 week losses are often chromosome related, however, I was told multiple losses in a row were statistically impossible and it pointed to something else going on.
Perhaps you could get referred to Dr Shehata by your GP or go private with him or try Dr Gorgy. They test immune issues as well as ensuring things like progesterone are in place. PM me if you need more support
