OHSS? Abdominal pain after egg collection

Morning all, I think this is my first attempt at a thread Smile.

I had my egg collection on Friday morning and felt quite nauseous on the day and had quite concentrated urine. Didn’t think much of it as I have had the busiest few days for various non ivf related reasons (have existing toddler from a previous round).

Had 12 eggs collected (every follicle had an egg apparently) and 7 were mature and have fertilised. I am a bit low on AFC and AMH so had 300 gonal f and 20 suprecur for nearly 2 weeks. This resulted in quite a few more eggs then I made in my first cycle (8 but only 3 mature at collection).

Felt ok on day of collection but a bit more pain in the evening. Had a very runny tum (sorry) in the evening and assumed a tummy bug as it was very watery.

When I woke up the next morning I had quite a bit more pain across my lower abdomen, and it’s still bad this morning and has kept me awake since 2am. I thought I had a uti yesterday but actually it’s mostly pain in the abdomen when I wee and only a bit of pain in my urethra. I am a bit bloated but carry spare weight on my tum anyway so hard to say exactly how much.

Runny tum has stopped and urine is actually relatively clear now. So less worried about dehydration.

I think it could be OHSS but husband reckons no way as I didn’t really have many eggs. Any advice?

I’ll call my clinic when they open but grateful for advice in the interim or any experiences you may have had with OHSS.

Thanks for reading this far! Xx

You can have pain without OHSS. I’m usually in a fair bit of pain for 2-3 days after collection but it’s most likely linked to my endometriosis.

If you are drinking, eating and weeing normally it’s usually not OHSS. Keep an eye on your temperature though as it can occasionally be infection.

Thank you porridgeislife - my consultant thinks it could be early OHSS so off for an investigation. Fingers crossed it’s something else though, I am a fellow endo sufferer so hopefully it is that.

I had OHSS and my only symptom was pain and bloatedness. You don't need to have a lot of eggs (though I did). Could be something else but definitely worth getting it checked out. Is the plan to have a fresh transfer?

By way of a quick update and in case this helps any other internet searchers in the future, my pain eased on the Monday so my clinic and I decided we were ok to go ahead with a fresh transfer. That was successful 🎉🎉🎉 but I have had pains again after my positive test and I’m currently in hospital with OHSS. Hopefully it’s just mild and I will be discharged today to manage it at home.

Congratulations! 🎉 I think it goes to show that your OHSS concerns were real. Hope it is mild and you recover quickly Flowers

@Passanotherjaffacake congrats !!
Hope you recover soon

I'm sure I had OHSS when I did my first fresh in June. I was so Ill after EC, felt sick all the drive home (3hrs) was hell. I was white as a sheet and felt awful for 3 days - by day 4 I was ok and day 5 I did transfer (unsuccessful) and was back to normal by afternoon of day 5

I had one lot of sickness and diroreah but main symptom was stomach pains (awful) and feeling unwell

My clinic still don't think it was OHSS as it went away so quick. Now I'm stimming on my 2nd cycle I'm scared I'll get that again but this time would freeze if I do get anything like that
I was so nervous about not being able to transfer but this time I don't want to put myself through that x

I think quite often the OHSS is self-limiting after EC and starts to ease after 4-5 days UNLESS you do become pregnant. The pregnancy hormones (especially if twins) sends it off into overdrive. Many yrs ago I had a 2 day transfer and although I felt awful they went ahead because they couldn't see much free fluid in the abdomen. I ended up spending about a week in hospital with severe OHSS which they stabilised to moderate and then it was a waiting game as it gradually eased off as the pregnancy hormones started to drop as the placentas took over. It was horrible while it lasted.
