Risk with transferring two embryos

About to start our FET cycle and the clinic have said it's up to us if we want to transfer two.

I have all really good quality blasts frozen apparently but have told us to be aware of the risks in transferring two.

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice? I'll speak to the nurses also but just wanted some first hand experience.

Thanks 😊

I transferred 2 and had twins.

I know just as many women who had triplets from a double transfer who also had twins so you should only Do it if you are absolutely
Comfortable with the idea of carrying and raising multiples. If you have any medical issues I wouldn't recommend a double. I was fit and healthy and found twin pregnancy brutal from around 20 weeks and was on bed rest. We were advised we may have to let one go at 28 weeks or risk both. We all Nearly died when a placenta detached and my twins were in NICU for 3 weeks.

That being said it's amazing and i would do it again if I could (I do actually have 2 more frozen)

Financially the cost is eye watering - I'm the main earner so back to work at 5 months - full time childcare is 2x our mortgage 😩

Why are they offering you the chance to have two? That could be a factor in my decision making if I were you (e.g. several previous unsuccessful FETs, age etc.). I have frozen blasts and I'm not allowed more than one (and as my first FET was successful that's totally understandable). It also depends on how concerned you are about time and money.

@tiggerwhocamefortea thank you for sharing 😊 it's given me a lot to think about!

@Holskey they didn't offer, I asked about transferring two and they said although they wouldn't usually it was up to me and I was to let the nurses know.

I have 5 frozen blasts but had an early miscarriage with my first frozen transfer.

I think they're going to increase my progesterone this time round but everything else will stay the same.

My clinic agreed to a double on the basis of

  • 4th transfer and had had 5 miscarriages previously
  • previously had done PGS testing and didn't get any normals so they considered chance of multiples low 🤣
  • they weren't AA grade - I chose a 5BA and a day 6 4BB - I wasn't "allowed" to transfer 2 top quality AA grades as a double
  • we'd spent £35k over 5 rounds to that point and had a good relationship with the clinic - they knew we were ready to stop and couldn't afford 4 single transfers which could potentially have taken another year whereas we could do 2 double transfers potentially in the space of 3 months
  • I'd already lost both tubes to ruptured ectopics so no risk of having another ectopic

Keen to know what your outcome was? :)

OP. Mine are suberb quality (20 year old donor) blasts. And are frozen in 2s. I'll have a double transfer and leave it up to the universe to decide. But I've been ttc for 6 years, it's our 4th transfer, it's expensive each time. If I were on my first few cycles I'd go for single, unless I was over 40.

Wow. Congratulations on your twins after all that!

Sorry about your miscarriage.

I guess it depends if you're happy with the idea of twins then and the increased risks, because it sounds like there's no reason to think a FET wouldn't be successful. Personally, I love the idea of twins, even with the extra expense and difficulty in the early years, but it's the increased risks (and associated worry) during pregnancy I'd struggle with.

@AliceAbsolum
I had twins from my double transfer and would do it all again tomorrow if I could except for the life threatening parts of course x

BuffyFanForever · 02/10/2021 05:56

I had several single transfers none of which were successful. My final 2 frozen embabies we did a double transfer. My twins are 8 months old and following their birth we did another round of ivf. Just did our first FET from the round (yesterday) - we did another double. Of the people I know who did double transfers we are the only one where we had 2 babies. Good luck!

Congrats! My twins are also 8 months! I'd love to do another double transfer! I was told by my clinic I'd have to wait at least 12 months to do a single transfer

AliceAbsolum · 02/10/2021 13:30

Lovely hopeful stories. You've given me some motivation to keep going. Not sure how you coped with 5 miscarriages. I had one after 3 rounds, that was 2 years ago and we still can't bring ourselves to go do the FET.

BuffyFanForever · 02/10/2021 19:23

Congrats on your twins too! We have 2 boys. What do you have? They wanted me to wait a year but on checking amh etc they said the egg collection had to be now or never basically! It all ended up happening quite quickly and once we’d done that we thought might as well get one transfer in this time and if unsuccessful we will wait for a few more months.

tiggerwhocamefortea · 02/10/2021 19:39

@BuffyFanForever

I have a boy and a girl ❤️💙

Are you worried in case you have a second set of twins so soon after your boys?

Medically for me it's a no go to have twins again as the placentas detached and we all nearly died and feedback from the doctors was just that my body Couldn't take the strain anymore

I need to wait until the twins get 30 hours free childcare before I can even consider another transfer x
