Polyp on womb

Evening all,

I was wondering whether anyone else has previously had to delay embryo transfer due to a polyp on the womb? We started our first round of IVF in May but on the day of egg collection I was told I have a polyp on my womb which would make successful embryo transfer / pregnancy unlikely. Having taken a year to get to the stage of undergoing treatment, it was really very difficult to hear I couldn’t have the transfer (plus I was coming round from egg collection) and so didn’t think to ask much about the polyp etc. I’m currently waiting for a procedure to have the polyp removed (the wait feels endless) and I understand I can then have a frozen embryo transfer.

It would be great to hear if anyone else has had a similar experience or undergone polyp removal? Thank you in advance!

@Agapanthus13 I’ve just had a hysteroscopy for the same reason - polyp was found on my final scan prior to FET, so it was cancelled. It was so frustrating and upsetting.

My polyp was exactly where an embryo would be placed, so Dr would not transfer with it there. I’ve also already had a failed FET and only have one embryo left, so can’t take any risks.

The hysteroscopy itself was fine. I had the same sedation as EC. I had some spotting for several days afterwards and some pelvic pain which felt like trapped gas, but it was manageable, didn't need pain killers. Hope you get everything sorted out soon, then you can move on and give yourself the best chance of success.

Hi @IslandStars
Thank you so much for your message! It’s strangely comforting to know of others experience.

I’m sorry hear about your previously failed FET, that must have made the pause in your treatment second time round hard to deal with. But that’s great to hear that you found the hysteroscopy reasonably OK. Do you know what the next steps are for, do you have to wait a set period of time before you can begin your meds for your FET?

May I also ask how long you waited for your hysteroscopy? I’ve been on the NHS wait list for over 4months now and they’re unable to give me any idea of the wait time. I got a quote this week to have it done privately, but it seemed steep at £4K. Especially as I only have 2 FE so expect we’ll need to do another round of EC etc in the future.

@Agapanthus13 You’re welcome, I know it’s a tough time on top of all the other mental strains of IVF. I’ve been able to start FET on my next cycle. There was only 11 days between my hysteroscopy and next period starting, but Dr said it was better to get on with it, as there’s always a small chance polyps can grow back.

I had my hysteroscopy through my clinic, so paid privately, but even then it was a 3 month wait, as there was a backlog. It cost around £2,600 which was cheaper than private hospitals quoted me. I found many wanted me to have it under GA, which costs more, rather than the sedation which clinics use for EC. I didn’t contact my GP/NHS at all, as I’m 42, so don’t have time to wait incase I need another round.

If you’re doing NHS funded IVF with a clinic, maybe see if you can pay for the procedure privately with them.

I had a polyp in my uterus in the exact place they’d want to put the embryo. I was told NHS wait could be 18 months or longer as covid has caused such major backlogs. I had it taken out privately for £3,000. It was a really easy surgery, I had IV sedation rather than a general anaesthetic, and felt no pain or side effects afterwards.
I think if you can manage it, go private as even cancer operations etc are hugely delayed at the moment so something completely non life threatening like this will keep being pushed back.

@IslandStars It seems most clinics & hospitals have a backlog for treatment from the past 18 months. I’m sure the wait has made what is already a difficult experience, all that harder to deal with for many.

Thank you for sharing your experience, I really appreciate it; and here’s wishing you all the best for your FET.

@Gensola Gosh, 18months wait is an extremely long time! I think you’re right and I’ll have a look into private options in a little more detail. The Dr who carried out my EC thought it would be a max 8week wait which is why I didn’t think anything of it to start with. Many thanks for sharing!

Hi everyone,
I found this thread while googling - the clinic found a polyp in me too - another three months wait 🥺
