Rapid drop in AMH

Hi All, just looking for a little advice as I am freaking out. My AMH levels have fallen from 1.8 to 0.4 in 8 months, that is 75%. This seems crazy to me. 8 months ago I had the ovaries of an average 37 year old but now I am worse than a 45 year old. During the 8 months I have taken my supplements, started acupuncture, quit caffeine, only walked for exercise and for the last 2 months I even stopped drinking as we were doing IUIs. I turned 40 3 months ago but I thought the 'massive fertility drop off at 40' was just a myth. Even the medical websites suggest AMH at my age should only decrease by 0.1 per year. Has anyone else experiecned this? TIA

I don't think AMH is that accurate to be honest, what's more important is the antral follicle count, as this will indicate your response to IVF. Have you had a recent scan? If not could you get one booked in?

Have you got any plans for treatment booked in?

@CaymanCat I had the opposite in my AMH took a big jump up between readings (taken just over a year apart), so I now feel quite sceptical about AMH levels and their accuracy. My clinic still says AMH is more appropriate an indicator or response than AFC (which my clinic doesn't use) but I responded poorly despite a 'normal' AMH level (or 'high' if you take my latest AMH results). I think really the only way you know how you will respond to IVF drugs is to take IVF drugs and see if I'm honest. I did 4 IUI attempts (all BFNs) with no success before moving to IVF, and personally I'd suggest moving to IVF sooner rather than later if you can.

Hi @CaymanCat
I didn't believe in the "massive drop at 40" but it seems to have happened to me too! In 2016, I was 36 with an AMH of 7 and an FSH of 6. In 2018, I was 38 with an AMH of 5 and an FSH of 7. 2021, I am now 41 and my FSH has shot up to 15.2. I haven't had my AMH done yet this year but from what I understand it must be very low for my FSH to be that high. Did you have your FSH level checked? As already said, I don't think the AMH level is gospel ... I have been told that my FSH needs to lower below 12 or no more IVF for me.
Sending you lots of luck x

Thank you all for your comments. I spoke to my Dr. and he believes the results are correct as my AFC which was 13 in December has fallen to 7 in August. I am losing an egg a month it seems! We are going ahead with IVF as soon as possible before that door closes. We live pretty much on a rock in the middle of nowhere so I am just glad we have an IVF facility here - no clothes shops but we do have IVF!

@firefly I can't believe how quick the drop is, after everybody spent the last year reassuring me that that never happens! I actually thought I was well above average and was pretty pleased with myself.
I didn't get my FSH re-tested as the Dr. thinks AMH is more reliable and tbh I am not sure I would want to. I need only positivity going forward. We have decided we will give IVF 2 rounds so fingers crossed I am not completed shriveled up yet. Good luck to you too x
