FET - Embryos

NHS/Private...

After a failed FET, were you given/allowed the option of having 2x embryos transferred on the next transfer (aware of risks etc.)?

Anyone please? Just want to know who tends to have more of a say over this?

I transferred 2 after a previously failed FET and had twins

Harder to get NHS clinics to agree though and depends on a lot of factors like your age and quality of embryos etc

I'm with NHS, and while I haven't got to a FET yet I've been told multiple times that while they don't recommend multiple embryo transfers in most circumstances it is ultimately the patients decision and they will go along with that. I expect different clinics/health boards have different policies though, unfortunately.

Thanks for your replies both.

@twinningatlife congratulations on your twins! Must've been such a nice feeling after a failed FET.

@Undermilkgood
I guess it's worth an ask. They can only say no.
I just thought because my IUI cycles all failed and my FET also failed, transferring two would hopefully give me a better chance and even if 2 implanted, I'm aware of the risks.
My AA embryo was the one that failed and I have 3 more frozen. 2 good quality and one that's they only just froze as it was improving before the freeze so they're giving it a chance. I think I'll ask if they'll transfer the best and worst quality ones 🤞🏼 hopefully they'll allow.
Wishing you luck on your journey 🍀

Mine was my 4th transfer which was why they agreed to a double

There are some studies which show transferring a really good embryo with a poor one can actually jeopardise the success of the whole transfer so I would only do 2 of a similar quality

@twinningatlife thanks for your advice.
I'll discuss it with them at my next appointment 🤞🏼

Hi, my first transfer with 33 year old embryos was a chemical. Good quality not too quality embryo (I think B+b+). On the second I was offered double transfer and think it was even the recommendation to some degree. The reasons for this were: the embryos I had left were good quality but not too quality and because the first one hadn’t worked. I actually declined the double transfer as felt the first had implanted and it was too risky to transfer two-as it happens that was the right decision for me as that second transfer ended in my one year old boy. Definitely worth remembering that embryo grading is not an exact science and my “lesser” quality embryo resulted in a birth.

I was NHS funded but they have a contract with a private clinic so it was the private clinic that did the transfer.

I think it all depends on the clinics approach, your age, your history, your embryo quality. I was quite surprised I was offered to transfer two and think it was perhaps quite unusual for good/fair quality 33 year old embryos. But as I say at my clinic it was almost like a checklist and if you had one unsuccessful transfer and embryos of a certain quality or lower you got offered to put two back.

Good luck.

@mouse1234567

Thank you so much for you reply and so nice to read you had your little boy.
I'm with nhs too and thought perhaps you'd have more say if private. I will just have to see what they advise at my next appointment. Thanks for sharing your experience. X
