Please help - Care manchester EC sedation

Does anyone know if care manchester offer general anaesthetic for EC instead of the usual iv sedation. I am waiting for a call back but the website says only iv sedation is given. The reasons I would like GA are:

  • I have a really retroverted uterus so scans are painful because of the angle. I expect the angle will be harder for them in the procedure.
  • it takes ages to find my left ovary as it’s always hidden.
  • I have had 2 really painful biopsies this year. I was told it was just like a smear but it was horrendous and I’ve never felt pain like it. I was on 60mg of codeine and I still felt all the horrible pain.
  • I am having massive panic attacks about it. I even had panic attacks sat on the chair when I had a filling at the dentist.
  • In both biopsies my legs move a lot coz of the pain and I’m worried as a needle is attached to the probe.
  • if they see me having a panic attack they might just cancel the cycle.

If anyone has had a GA with care manchester, could you let me know why they let you? It would be really helpful to have people’s experiences before care phone me back to discuss.

TIA xx

Hi @XjustagirlX I'm sorry you're feeling anxious. I'm not with Care, but thought I'd share my experience of sedation at egg collection as our circumstances are similar.

I also have a retroverted uterus and a fibroid near my left ovary which makes it difficult to access. I had standard sedation but didn't recall anything from theatre at all. It is an anxious time and I did feel scared walking into theatre but there's lots of people there to look after you.

I too have had excruciating biopsies and like you can't keep still when they're performing them and clench up. But I had none of those issues during egg collection as I was completely out of it. The next thing I knew I was in my bay with the oxygen mask on.

But that is just my experience and if you feel strongly that you would like general anesthetic, I hope your clinic listen to you. I vaguely recall the consent form talking about general anesthetic, so it must be an option.

How far into this cycle are you? Best wishes x

I'm not with Care but when I had EC with sedation I honestly didn't remember any of it. I remember chatting with the anaesthetist as he prepared to give the sedation and then I was in a bed in the recovery area. I did have some pain afterwards but the nurses were great and gave me pain relief straight away. It's maybe worth speaking with one of their anaesthetists if you're worried or unsure which you'd prefer.

@VenusStarr @Scirocco thank you both so much for replying. You have helped to reassure me. Hopefully I will be like you both and will just wake up and it will all be over.

I couldn’t help researching it and I read about people who weren’t asleep and felt everything.

I’m on short protocol so I will be starting injecting with my period around 23rd July. But my meds got delivered today and it all got too overwhelming looking at the needles and then it actually being so close.

How did your treatment go if you don’t mind me asking?

I'm glad it's helped @XjustagirlX I remember feeling overwhelmed but excited when my meds arrived. Honestly, the anticipation is worse than the actual injection. What meds do you have? I was on bemfola and cetrotide (this one is a bit stingy but still OK).

Sadly my round ended in a chemical (I do have recurrent miscarriages from natural conceptions). I have 2 frosties, so I'm going to do the era, emma and alice tests before we look to do a FET in the Autumn. X

@VenusStarr sorry about your chemical.

I’ve had 3 miscarriages last year from natural trying. Very early at about 6 weeks. It’s horrible.

I’ve got ovaleap and then centrotide. And then a buserelin and gonasi.

Ivf is so strange because when TTC it’s viewed as a final step and hope. then once it arrives it’s a whole other level of worry and things that can go wrong.

Thank you @XjustagirlX I'm sorry for your losses ❤️

I actually found ivf less stressful than ttc naturally once I started injections because I could control that and I just had to follow the instructions and the clinic took all the responsibility. Try and take each day as it comes. I booked the week off after egg collection which helped. My clinic called on day 1 and 3 which is quite anxiety inducing.

I know it's a while off, but when you do transfer, you definitely don't need a very full bladder with a retroverted uterus. I mentioned it to the nurse before my transfer and they made me go for a wee! The doctor said my bladder was just right and transfer went really smoothly. I was scared due to previous bad smears and biopsies and I barely noticed it, which really surprised me x
