Clomid or weight loss

Hi,

I have been diagnosed with PCOS. I was put on metformin which helped me lose weight and also helped regulate my cycles.

I have 29 day cycles now. I shifted 15kg pre lockdown last year (it took me a good year to do it). Its now been a year and I haven’t shifted a single kg but I’ve kind of yo-yo-ed on and off my diet/exercise and therefore have maintained that 15kg. (I’m now on a BMI of 29)

As its now been 2 years my husband wants me to try clomid which I was given by a private consultant. But the one thing that the consultant said to me was that if I lose weight I will naturally conceive its just I am really struggling to do it in lock down.

Also I did conceive naturally in January but that ended in a miscarriage at 6 weeks.

Any tips on weight loss or any success stories about clomid would be appreciated. I turned 30 this year and my husband is paranoid we’ll never have kids if we rely on me losing weight 😞

Er, how does the consultant know that you will conceive naturally if you lose weight? That seems a bit presumptuous!

@Ofpalestsilver It is I agree, most doctors blame my weight for many things 😅 it’s probably true but I feel they don’t see past the weight sometimes.

Anyway the reason I am gripping on to the possibility of naturally conceiving is because my diagnosis for PCOS is based on my weight and that I don’t ovulate (Day 2 bloods are normal, no cysts on my ovaries but day 21 low). My day 21 bloods were 9 when I started this journey and after metformin plus weightloss it’s at 22. They think a bit more weightloss and and prog should naturally go up above 30?

But really struggling with the weight now😞 I can’t seem to lose anything during this lockdown

You’re only a BMI of 29. This is bullshit. Sorry, it just makes me super angry that weight is used as a barrier to everything. You’ve done an impressive job at losing 15kg. That is not easy. It’s been two years and you’re within the guidelines for NHS help. I mean obviously it’s up to you but I personally think you should get going with Clomid and if the consultant is resistant make more demands on it. I’m endlessly frustrated with being fobbed off because of my weight and all it’s done is delay my treatment.

@Ofpalestsilver thanks hun. It’s not been easy losing that 15kg and I still have another 13kg to get back to my healthy so genuinely feel like its so far away 😞.

How far are you on your journey/treatment?

How old are you? Early 30s or above? Take the clomid.

Under 30's? Focus on the weight loss.

Clomid is a serious drug. Not without side effects, some of which can be long term (caused me to grow a fibroid).

Elakiya · 20/06/2021 16:11

@physicskate I turned 30, 2 months ago.

A fibroid is the last thing I want. My cycles are already very very heavy and PCOS is taking the blame for that so I really don’t want a fibroid.

@Elakiya I'm in the middle of IVF after three cycles of IUI. I would have liked to have tried Clomid but was messed around in circles for a while so didn't want to waste the time. In the end it was the right thing as I saw how much stimulation I needed to ovulate.

I actually took Clomid in my late teens as part of treatment to regulate my periods. I wasn't trying to get pregnant then though! Being young and healthy, I didn't feel too much of an impact from it. And along with the other meds I took it did help solve the issue I had at the time.

YouBoggleMyMind · 21/06/2021 14:43

Take the clomid. I didn't ovulate naturally with a healthy bmi and there's no way a consultant can be sure that you will too.
