Hi all,

I'm after a bit of advice on what to do next. We've been trying to conceive a second baby since April last year. I got pregnant in July, but it was an mmc and I had an MVA in September. Since then, my periods have been all over the shop (pretty regular before) and I haven't got pregnant.

I spoke to my GP in April who referred me to my local hospital for investigations. I just rang them to chase the referral and they said their waiting list is currently very long because of covid and they'd be in touch. They couldn't be specific about time frames, but I got the impression it would be a long time.

Has anybody got any ideas about what to do next? I've just turned 40, so time is of the essence!

Do I go back to my GP and ask for tests through them (although I've read on here that some people are waiting months for the results of those)? Or do I go private (expensive!)?

To be honest you aren't entitled to fertility treatment on the NHS because you already have a child (and also depending on where you live some have a cut off of age 40 too) so I would just go private.....but by the time you've paid for the tests you may as well have just paid for IVF if that's something you'd be open to doing?

@andivfmakes3 I'm not sure about IVF tbh - we've only just started this journey, so it's all a bit new! At the moment I'd just like to have investigations to see if there's a reason for our infertility and go from there.

The main test you'd need is a day 21 progesterone level blood test - which probably isn't that expensive privately? Then some ultrasound clinics do ovulation/follicle tracking - which can be a few hundred pounds (I did that after I lost a tube to an ectopic so I knew what side I would ovulate on)

The thing to do would be to be price these up at private clinics and then see if it's something you can afford or whether you'd rather see out the wait list?

Or maybe go back to hour GP and see if they can do the blood test as that doesn't usually need a referral?

Your GP can definitely do the day 3/21 blood tests, and can organise semen analysis for your partner, so I'd start there. If it shows you're not ovulating then I'm not sure where you stand with clomid prescription etc when you already have a child but GP can advise.

Then you could pay for the AMH privately to check ovarian reserve and maybe a HSG to check tubes etc.
