Egg retrieval with a local anesthetic

I'm panicking ladies. Soon I'll be having our first IVF cycle and the Dr told me that because they are a small private clinic they don't have an anesthetist on site so they will use a local anesthetic injection instead... now I'm freaking out because I'm thinking this is going to hurt like a bitch and I won't be able to move. Has anyone had this done and please tell me what's going to happen and what it feels like.. the Dr said I'll have gas and air available but is that really going to stop me feeling a needle going into my vagina. We all know how it stings when you have an injection in the mouth. Help!

Hi @Rdaisyleo.

I had the same experience and I was absolutely terrified. I started this thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/infertility/4199994-Panicking have a read.

Honestly, it will be nowhere NEAR as awful as you are imagining. I am the biggest wuss in the world, but it was fine and I know I could absolutely do it all over again if I had to.

You will be fine, honestly x

@goldilocks2528 I've just had a read. Thankyou for replying. I feel better about it now, still not 100%, I suppose on the day I'll hopefully have a different frame of mind and know its worth potentially some pain for the possible positive outcome. Thanks again xx

No problem @Rdaisyleo.
I am terrified of needles, my other half had to do all my IVF jabs and I hate hospitals etc etc. If I can get through it you most defiantly can!! It's not nice, but you will be one step closer to your dream and hopefully you will get lots of lovely good eggs to make that possible x

Do they not offer any kind of relaxant like diazepam? Or could you get some off your gp to relax you abit beforehand?

Hi @elsaesmeralda
I had to insert a diclofenac suppository 1 hour before I was due at the clinic, but that was it. It is a painkiller that lasts 16 hours and I had no pain after the procedure at all.
