Short protocol- is norethisterone always used?

Hey guys,
So we were due to start IVF in January for MFI. I was told to ring the first day of my period. Unfortunately due to lock down the clinic closed. Now they have reopened I spoke to the nurse today who advised me to start my prescription of norethisterone. No one has ever spoken to me about this before and it wasn’t in my protocol or prescribed previously. She then seemed unsure if I needed it or not so said she would get the doctor to phone me to talk to me about it (which I am waiting for now). Just wondered if it is something that is routinely used and they just forgot to tell me about it before? My periods are very regular. Thanks

My clinic insists on a norothisterone prep month for bloody everything, but they make it very clear that they do that. If your clinic is wavering a bit then yes, do make the point that your cycles are super regular and they should have told you if it was required. I totally sympathise with you - so much of the emotional strain of IVF is related to the delays and waiting about.

Hi, I have had a few cycles at the clinic you are with and their usual protocol is to put everyone on norothisterone, not only for timing purposes but also there was some research that suggested better IVF outcomes after using it pre-cycle (I quizzed my doctor on this!). I have always had this on my prescription.
However one of my cycles I did not use it due to a mis-communication by the clinic and they were happy for me to still proceed that month despite not having it. My period are very regular so it didn’t affect timings.
Hope that helps and good luck with your cycle, I know how stressful IVF is without having mis-communication or unclear information heaped on top!!

I'm currently taking norethisterone to delay my period for a week, as our clinic is not doing egg collection between 30th March and 6th April. It's a timing issue for me.

Okay thanks for your responses! They must just have forgotten to talk to me about it... another month to wait now to start treatment which is frustrating but at least things are getting going again!

I’m on the short protocol and not on northisterone x

Hey I was told I had to take it as it helps to get the follicles to start off at the same size so when you stim you have a better chance of them not being all different sizes.

My awareness was that the protocol with downreg is long protocol as it’s longer than just starting in the injections. This is my experience of doing a long protocol with downreg and short protocol without it.
