Will we get clomid/Letrozole on the NHS?

Hi everyone, just looking for a bit of advice.

Been TTC for 3 years, currently awaiting testing, include a HyCosy and detailed pelvic exam etc...

I know this is getting a bit ahead of myself but I'm just wondering. I'm basically not ovulating, so depending on if my HyCosy comes back normal as I'm hoping, I'm hoping the consultant will try us on ovulation induction treatment like clomid or letrozole. My partner already has a child so unfortunately we know we're not eligible for any ivf or any other treatment (so unfair but what can you do!). But I was hoping they would give us clomid but now I'm wondering if they will even entertain that? Like will they fund it or will we have to go private? I thought they may give it us as it's just medication and sometimes a scan but I'm really unsure!

Thanks 😊

I was given clomid/letrozole for trying for my second but it really depends where you live and what your CCG offers.

BritneyWeaver · 03/03/2021 19:45

You will need to look at the funding in your area.

My DP has a child from a previous relationship and we don't qualify for funding for Clomid. We're having to pay £260 a round.

Thanks both for your replies! I feel so stupid to have not have even thought about this until now! I just thought yeah it's medication they'll give us it! My ccg is notoriously sh*t so I don't think I'll have much luck either, on to private then I guess ☹️

If I go private for clomid can I still get my scans done with the NHS or does it kind of void it?? So confusing!

If they won't offer you clomid/letrozole on the nhs then they're unlikely to offer you the scans either. It's really crap.

oooplla · 03/03/2021 23:39

@YouBoggleMyMind sorry I worded that wrong I meant like my diagnostic tests! For example, We're waiting for a HyCosy test although on a long waiting list. But if before this I start the process with signing up to a fertility clinic and having a consultation, will the nhs kind of wash their hands of me and take me off the waiting list etc? It's all a minefield and very shit! Xx

Firstly find out what you are eligible for - a work colleague went back to GP to request Clomid for subsequent pregnancies and got it with no issues.

I had Clomid prescribed by the NHS but no monitoring, I paid for private scans and a progesterone blood test and they actually upped the Clomid dosage for me based on those results, yet still would not fund any monitoring.

P. S. If the CCG is shit you're allowed to say that here! Lots of medication isn't funded (sadly).

@oooplla we must have been typing at the same time.
You can stay on the waiting list in case your turn comes up for the Hycosy but if the wait is that long you might prefer to get it done privately.

When I had private treatment they asked if they had permission to share with my GP. The consultant said some people didn't want their GP to know they'd had IVF.
I don't know why they mentioned that to us but obviously the NHS only knows what private information you choose to share.
I had private vaccinations for travel before and they asked for consent to share with my GP, again not sure why I wouldn't share but it's not automatically shared.

@JeNeBaguetteRien thanks so much for your reply! Really grateful for the advice. I'm going to check in with the nhs clinic next week and just ask if I can speak to someone (whether I'll get this or not is another question!). The problem is everything is so slow with the nhs. I'm not for one second moaning as I know we're very lucky to have a health care system! But it is absolutely bloody shit how I can't access any help just as my partner has a child.. very unfair☹️

We're swaying towards just abandoning the whole nhs route and going straight to private, we have been saving and if we carry on like we are we will be able to afford it, fortunately. It's a lot of heartbreak to go through and a lot of time to waste! Ahhh how rubbish! X

Links to ccg guidelines on how their fertility treatment works (or doesn't) can easily be found on the fertility fairness website - no need to waste your time (or nhs time) to wait to speak to someone.

oooplla · 04/03/2021 13:58

@physicskate I've researched but can't find anything regarding ovulation induction. I don't necessarily think speaking to them to clear things up is a waste of time as then I'll know for certain but thanks for the advice 😊

I'm in Essex and TTC #2 (but DH #1) and I've had my Hycosy and Clomid on NHS but I'm not eligible for IVF but then apparently no one is in Essex. My fertility consultant knows I'm starting IVF my cycle after next and if letting me do one more month of Clomid and still scanning me throughout while all my IVF consults and checks are being done.

EL8888 · 04/03/2021 22:41

I got Clomid through the NHS but no scans or tracking so kind of pointless really. I think it was a bit of a “shut up and go away” from the consultant. Clomid didn’t work for us

JeNeBaguetteRien · 05/03/2021 17:03

@EL8888 that's exactly the impression I got too, especially when I paid for tracking and they happily upped my prescription.

Crazydoglady123 · 05/03/2021 21:32

My Clomid has been pretty unmonitored to be fair. I did three cycles of Letrozole and a cd21 blood test on last round then straight onto Clomid which my body over responded to and when I called my fertility clinic in agony they just said there was nothing they could do so I paid for a private scan and they found 5 ruptured haemorraghic cysts, enlarged ovaries and lots of free fluid so I do think they should monitor patients. I've had a month off it and trying one more time on my next cycle (af due anytime) but this time they're scanning CD12
