IVF cancelled - trigger taken - should we dtd?

Hi all, my ivf was cancelled yesterday as I only had 3 follicles of the correct size and all grew very quickly which my consultant said indicated bad quality. He said to take trigger so I would ovulate and get my period in two weeks. He also said as a consultant he couldn’t recommend we dtd when I ovulate (due to ovulate at 6.30am tomorrow).

We are tempted as we are doing ivf for poor sperm quality (not many normal, count of 5 million) and think maybe with 3 eggs there might be a chance of sperm reaching one.. I ovulate normally so we try every month (for the past 3 years) with no luck... so what are the chances of even one fertilising in this situation never mind 2-3 which is the multiples situation the consultant wants to avoid.... I response very badly to the ivf meds despite an ok AMH and no issues on my side so we haven’t had any luck with IVF so far - this was to be our second round of embryo banking and we have 3 frozen.

Any thoughts?

Just at the end of my first IVF cycle and my understanding is that the follicles have the egg inside them so the chances of the sperm penetrating the follicle and reaching the egg I think is slim. The chance of all of the eggs being released from your follicles - not sure about but if they've grown fast I think that would indicate they weren't mature and wouldn't fertilise anyway.

I don't want the risks are of you dtd but honestly I think your chances of getting pregnant are really low, I'm sorry

Personally I wouldn't want to waste the eggs so would DTDA 🤣 and when I did non medicated FETs would also try naturally at the same time as a transfer. But only do it if you are comfortable with the risk of having a multiple pregnancy (Ive got IVF twins and a multiple pregnancy is brutal and high risk!)

I'd personally DTD now. Getting the sperm on the way to egg central just before they pop out is the best timing. I can understand your specialist not recommending it because if you miraculously conceive triplets he doesn't want that situation it's v high risk. Depends on how much of a gambler you are and whether you signed any contracts stating you wouldn't have unprotected sex during the cycles.

@foodiefil All eggs grow in follicles normally and then when ovulation occurs they are released into the vicinity of the fallopian tube to travel towards uterus. She will be using the trigger shot so they will all be stimulated to ovulate. It's like a normal menstrual cycle in that way but 3x the normal egg count. The sperm will not have to penetrate the follicle.

@indub I know all eggs grow in follicles but I didn't think the trigger shot released them. I thought egg collection took the fluid from the follicle and they got the egg that way?

foodiefil · 20/02/2021 08:45

I took a trigger shot too and that's what they did for me

foodiefil · 20/02/2021 08:48

Oh sorry I misunderstood - the trigger shot is to ovulate. Apologies OP and @indub

Yes I would DTD, no question. The chances of pregnancy are low, but might be a bit better than in your natural cycles.
I've had a cycle cancelled due to poor response and we DTD. It didn't result in pregnancy but I was still glad we tried, plus sex is a good way to release tension.
