Infertility after Anorexia

Just wondering if anyone has experienced this?

I had anorexia as a kid and didn't have periods for 5 years. Was underweight and fed by NG tube for over a year.

Was told at the time I would have issues conceiving. Three consultants (2 Eating disorder psychs and 1 medical paediatrician) and GP also said this. I've put it down to scaremongering.

When we had first appointment 2 years ago they discovered issue with my partner and no further investigations into me. Have said I have pcos.

We've had two failed transfers. And two cycles where I haven't responded to stims. Just worried that maybe there is some truth to what I was told when I was younger.

Hi @jodesxx

I am sorry you are struggling to conceive, and that you struggled with anorexia when you were young...

I am 39, and i suffered from severe anorexia between the ages of 19 and 25 years. I didn't have my periods for 5 years, and suffered subsequent osteoporosis anf hypothyroidy. I was always told by my Doctors at the time that this wouldn't impact my fertility at all, as long as my cycles return. By gaining weight my cycles came back and my bone density improved.

In the last two years i fell pregnant 6 times (although i lost all these pregnancies), which means that my past anorexia didn't affect my fertility. The reasons why i dont manage to keep these babies are due to other medical complications.

I can't speak for your case. I suppose you are not underweight anymore? Failed transfers can be due to poor quality embryos (unless these embryos were tested by PGT-A?). Regarding response to drugs, maybe they should have tried differently and higher dose the 2nd time? PCOS may have an impact on that too i suppose, although I am not a specialist at all.

Really, I do not think anorexia had an impact on our struggles, so dont be hard on yourself.

S.
