NHS wait longer in big cities?

Good evening ladies.

I talked to a few people about this a little on another thread but I was taking it a bit off-topic so I thought I would start this new one. I am sorry, I am not very good at keeping it short! And also apologies in advance for sounding unbearably impatient.

We need to get our NHS funding forms signed and sent off (which is great by itself of course :) ). But the clinic insists on having another consultation with us first. However, we have been given a consultation time 6 weeks from now! Even though we have all the test results etc. etc. There is zero left to do in the meantime.

Some of this I think is because we had to be transferred from a clinic in a small village to a clinic in a big city (long story). And I called the new clinic, and they said they only do NHS consultations one afternoon every other week! Hence the long wait.

Do you think this is because the new clinic is in a bigger city? And if so, what sort of 'delay' should I be expecting after they finally do send off the forms? Will they also do the first treatment consultation only on 2 afternoons a month i.e. another 6 week wait? I don't know which specialist you see at what stage, and how much of a wait there is meant to be, so it would be great to hear others' experiences with this. They did already tell me to also expect 6 weeks for the funding forms to be approved. So would that be 6 + 6 + 6?! (And then waiting for my period as well obv.) It just feel like such a waste of time Sad And I am constantly in such a state of alertness to be in pristine health re: alcohol, caffeine, exercise, vitamins, etc...

Basically I am having a bit of a panic and wondering if we will end up transferring a second time to go somewhere less busy. There's half a dozen clinics around here and the only reason we have been with these two so far is because the NHS (apparently somewhat randomly) assigned us there to start with. And I didn't question it... because I was just so ridiculously grateful that the NHS was doing this for us at all.

Every time I call with a question I end up speaking to three people in completely different departments, none of whom have access to my records or know what I am referring to... so it is so difficult to get answers!

With my NHS clinic I had finished all the tests by January 2019, didn’t get to see the consultant until May 2019 and would have had my first round in March 2020 but that was cancelled due to covid, finally had my first fresh cycle august 2020 so over 18 months wait. It was really frustrating and much as I’m so appreciative to have NHS funding I was very low about waiting so long. I live in a reasonably big city with a clinic which is hugely busy, I’ve heard the waiting list time is even longer now.

Hope you get answers soon though about how long it will all take for you.

I was first referred December 2019 and the last estimate I got for starting treatment was "somewhere around October 2021". Covid has majorly impacted upon NHS services in all areas, sadly.

@Scirocco we were told there is no wait. In our innitial consultation in Jan they said we'd have another appointment in Feb, then funding approved in March, and starting treatment in April. That's why I am wondering if there's a difference between smaller and bigger cities.

Variations will depend on a lot of factors, such as different service pressures within health boards/trusts, so some people may have shorter or longer waits than others due to factors outside their control. Size of populations may well be a factor. There's no harm in phoning and asking for updates though, and if you've been told there's no wait then that's really positive already as it means things will hopefully move relatively quickly after this stage is completed.
