Relocating whilst awaiting treatment

Hi everyone,

We are in the process of being referred on to specialists right now due to what our GPs have referred to as "subfertility". I have endometriosis, my partner has a low sperm count and low morphology.

We are currently in the process of selling our house and will be relocating across the country later this year. This is work related and unfortunately is unavoidable.

Does anyone know what the situation is with treatment, waiting lists etc if you move to a completely new area and hospital trust once the process of referrals and things has begun?

At the moment we're in the very early stages and no potential treatment options have been discussed with us, but we'd love to know what to expect with a relocation pending.

If we were put on a waiting list of any kind here for example and then moved, would we go to the back of the queue again in the new area, or even have the start the whole process again?

I have tried to google but I don't think i'm phasing it correctly as I can't seem to find anything. Any insight would be appreciated.

I suspect you will be added to the end of wait lists once you get into the new area. If you are definitely moving to a specific area could you call the local clinic there and explain situation and ask if they'll take referral from your GP now? Confused

Are you hoping to have treatment on the NHS? You'd need to check whether there was a difference in funding criteria ie number of cycles, age etc

Thank you for the replies.

From googling it seems that the guidelines where we live now and the trusts where we are moving to seem to be very similar in terms of age requirements, BMI, number of funded cycles for things like IVF and so on. As we are in such early stages we still don't really know what treatment options are available to us or what will be suitable for our situation so research on that is quite general at the moment.

In terms of being referred to the new area now, I did think of asking whether the referral could be made for there, but the problem is I don't know when exactly we're going to be moving there as it'll depend on when we can get our house sold. It just needs to be before September. There are a couple of different trusts within the areas that we are looking to move to as well which also complicates things.

I think this might be one where we just have to wait for the initial referral, discuss options and go from there. But I can only imagine we'll go to the end of the list again too.

My daughter moved areas, she had been on the waiting list for ages, not even had her first appointment.

New area, she was seen within a few weeks and her treatment started almost immediately.

That is very good to know @480Widdio, thank you. Fingers crossed for such a seamless transition for us too.

I hope everything has gone well for your daughter Flowers

I moved just after my clinic referral. Afraid of delays, I just didn't tell them! I used my parents' address for letters (so to stay in the same area) and drove 3 hours from my new home to every appointment. I'm not recommending it - I knew at the time it was probably a bit daft - but I regret nothing! Grin My clinic had no waiting times and I didn't even want to risk being turned away/told to wait for the IVF I'd already been promised. Hopefully it will turn out to be a good thing for you as it was for PP's daughter.

Thank you Yokey.

That would definitely be an option. It will be about 3 hours distance for us too I think after the move, but if we're already well underway with things by the time we need to move that could be something to think about Smile
