Ivf after a year

Hi everyone,

I only have one tube due to a previous ectopic. I've been ttc for a year, semen analysis is fine, hormones all ok, and am waiting to see if my remaining tube is clear via a hsg or hyscosy.

I've looked at the statistics and know that post ectopic, 62 percent conceive withing 2 years. I'm 33.

Would I be ridiculous to go for private IVF even if my tube is clear? I just feel like otherwise I'm wasting the last few years my eggs will be hopefully at there best.

What do people think? Would you wait or would you pull the trigger for ivf?

Hi @TubelessWonder. I’m not offering advice but just saying what I did. Unsuccessful trying of a year. Went private. Bloods normal. Semen analysis normal. Clinic didn’t do any investigative tests to check tubes, scarring etc - they said they could but likely same outcome so we went straight into ivf. Well it still took time. So I have unexplained fertility - I do feel like I’d like to get to the bottom of it - but again it takes time and I didn’t want to waste that. Obviously it’s up to you and what you feel you want to do. I actually had a natural pregnancy following successful ivf but unfortunately ended in miscarriage and no positives since.

Hi @TubelessWonder.

Why would you need to go private? Has the NHS actually told you they will not fund you?

We ended up seeing a specialist only by coincidence, not because of TTC, and one appointment lead to another etc. and we found out we have severe male factor issues, which seems to (I don't have the confirmation yet so don't take my word for this quite right now!) qualify us for IVF despite not having tried for 2 years. (I mean it is a bit disheartening they are so certain we will definitely require it, but here we are.)

If they do put us on a 2 year waiting list however, we will go private. I would have rather put a deposit on a new house, but house can wait, the eggs can't. It depends on your financial situation whether that makes sense for you though.

I should add - went private to avoid NHS waiting list and because was fortunate enough to be able to - would have been entitled to one round on nhs but the waiting list for first appointment at the time was 11 months - plus everything else before starting treatment.
