Anyone had a Laparoscopy?

CycleGirl20 · 06/01/2021 16:58

I have a Laparoscopy next week under general anesthetic. They will be removing a fibroid at the same time, hence the general. Has anyone gone through similar? How was it?

Not had one but on the waiting list after hycosy found polyp.

Desperate in to get it done as we've just passed the two year mark of TTC now.

HaveITheRightToHoldYou · 06/01/2021 19:33

I’ve had a couple. I would say I was left a little bit tender & swollen but I was up hanging washing on the line the next morning and back at work after one week off. Took a few days to be able to do my jeans up though so pjs or joggers would be best.
The most painful aspect was the gas they inflate you with. A bit gets trapped and it’s quite painful, worst pain was up at my ribs & shoulder. Peppermint oil capsules can help alleviate it a bit. Tbh it depends on the gynae. My first one was awful and she left loads of gas, second one was a lovely woman and she obviously let as much out as possible as I hardly suffered. Sleeping propped up can help but be prepared to have disturbed sleep for a night or two. Sutures were dissolvable but can pull a bit & take longer than you expect to dissolve. My second lap I ended up removing mine after 3 weeks as they were showing no signs of dissolving but the first lot were gone within a couple of weeks. Overall the incision sites feel a bit bruised and tender, but not agonising, a bit crampy & uncomfortable for a couple of days & a bit tired from GA.
I hope all goes smoothly for you Flowers

Thank you @HaveITheRightToHoldYou. That's really helpful. Awkward question... How does the gas come out? (🙈 Am I going to be farting all night Hmm. Should I let my OH know 😂? )

@theotherfossilsister did they say anything to you about the likelihood of something like a polyp causing infertility? I'm hoping mine comes out, then I'm pregnant quickly after healing 🤞

@cyclegirl they said it could definitely be a cause. Mine is quite big though. Wouldn't it be great if we both had our laparacopies then got pregnant within three months.

I sometimes feel I can't bare another month of not being pregnant.

Dp has lowish to normal sperm count though so maybe that is a reason too. Do you have any other factors?

I hope things work out for us in 2021

CycleGirl20 · 07/01/2021 14:40

@theotherfossilsister my DH has a high sperm count, but poor morphology. He was only at 1% but then he's only had one test so I'm hoping a retest would be more positive. I think I've had 2 very early positive pregnancy tests, but then my period has come, so that's a reason to be optimistic.

Imagine, pregnant within 3 months! I'm rather excited.

@CycleGirl20 I stopped testing early because it made me crazy, but last January my period was late and really heavy (I told myself I'd test at two weeks late) - it was also kind of lumpy (sorry, that's gross.) I took a day off work and the GP said to take a pregnancy test to see if it was an MC but I had none in so took one when it arrived, which was very definitely negative. No idea what that was, but have promised myself I will test if I am ever late again (not been late since tho.)

I don't know if it was caused by polyp or early MC.

We went private in the end to get the polyp diagnosed, in September, and have been on NHS waiting list to get it out since October when my GP made the referral. Was so glad to get the diagnosis, but I found the private health care provider I went to a bit rubbish, and dare I say, it seemed less clean than NHS places.

DP has low morphology, motility and count, but on the second analysis it was slightly higher (lowest end of normal.) He's taking Zinc and Vitamin D, and drinking V8 everyday, as someone else on here told me this helped with sperm count?

How long have you been trying? I hope we are both pregnant in three months of the op.

I am waiting for the post every day and cursing Covid for buggering everything up.

Fuzzyspringroll · 07/01/2021 18:44

I had a laparoscopy to remove my second ectopic, then another one six months later to check my tubes using dye. I got pregnant the month after the second laparoscopy (we didn't ttc in the six months in between simply because I felt my body needed to recover).
Recovery after both operations was fine. I stayed in hospital for a few days after the first one, which was mostly due to the ectopic. I went home the same day after the second one.
Good luck. :) I feel like I need another one to ttc #2, but I am booked in for a hycosy first and hope that'll do it already.

Hi @CycleGirl20, I’ve had 2 laparoscopies. Best of luck, but I think the anticipation is worse than the actual thing.

First was when I asked for one as I suspected endometriosis, turned out I had quite severe endometriosis so had that lasered off. It was rough the first 24-48hours because of the bloating and soreness but was still able to go for little walks after the first day.

Second was a lap and a hysteroscopy because they found a fibroid and I was still not pregnant (over one year after 1st lap). Similar to what others have said and my first experience, bit achy but wasn’t bed ridden or anything!

You’ll be fine and good luck, defo walk around if you can as that will ease some of the gas! I wasn’t flatulent or anything 😂 just had a massive belly for a couple of weeks! Take it easy, no heavy lifting etc and you should be back to normal in no time x

CycleGirl20 · 07/01/2021 20:58

@ShiMo do you mind me asking, have you had any success getting pregnant after your two ops?

ShiMo · 07/01/2021 21:02

I haven’t I’m afraid. Sorry to be a downer, now exploring ivf. Hope it works out for you though xx

CycleGirl20 · 07/01/2021 21:18

@ShiMo sorry to hear that. Sounds like you'll be in a good place health-wise for IVF though with those two laps out of the way. Good luck!

Thought I'd share my experience too. First laparoscopy to remove ectopic p, quite sore the next day or so but nothing too bad. I fell pregnant 2m after that. TTC for number 2 for 3 + years now and in between had another laparoscopy for suspected endo which turned out to be adhesions from c section so that was fixed during the surgery. Recovery was speedy, again sore for a day or two. I fell pregnant twice since both ended up in miscarriages. We are starting IVF on Monday next weekConfused. Best of luck!!Flowers

theotherfossilsister · 08/01/2021 10:42

@Shimo were they able to laser off the scarring the same day as the lap r was that another operation? My Hycosy found no endo but I doubt the diagnosis slightly.

Good luck with IVF to all of you brace ladies embarking on it.

ShiMo · 08/01/2021 10:59

@theotherfossilsister they managed to get rid of all the endo the first time, the second time was more investigative as I still wasn’t getting pregnant and they suspected scarring, but they didn’t fine any and they found no endo. The hysteroscopy was at the same time. That was in Aug 2020. So now my diagnosis is unexplained infertility as they can’t find anything else :(

You would need a lap for endo as a hysteroscopy only checks the inside of the womb. Endo can appear anywhere in the pelvis including ovaries, pelvic wall, Fallopian tubes, bladder etc so that’s why a lap is needed to give a better view. If you do suspect endo, defo push for a lap as that’s the only way to get a diagnosis.

Thanks for well wishes, I sadly had one failed round of IVF before Christmas. So trying to build myself up for the next round, but yes anyone going through IVF is a warrior! Good luck to you all 💐

CycleGirl20 · 08/01/2021 16:04

Just had my pre-consultation. The doctor thinks one of the lumps they thought was a fibroid might be endo, so now I have fibroids and endo! Does anyone know the impact of endometriosis? @Doremifasol did they say anything to you about the impact if it had have been endo? I guess I'll find out the extent of it, if at all, next week. One fibroid should come out easily. The other might need stitches which will mean no TTC for 6 months (!!). I'm 35, so hopefully I have time.

Quite a lot going on, but also feel lucky if I can get it sorted in these times.

I had a lap done last November (done privately with a specialist) as I have stage 2 endometriosis. Specialist removed all the endo plus a cyst on my ovary. It took me quite a bit of time to recover from the surgery and spent 2 days in hospital and then had 5 weeks off work. The gas pain is by far the worst part of it and takes about a week for it to subside.

Redcobra · 19/10/2021 05:42

@ShiMo I know I’m late in this but I’m finally at home a week after having endo excision laparoscopy and my bloated tummy is huge! I’m moving around during the day and letting off lots of little burpees which I think is good. However, when I lay down at night it’s uncomfortable.
Apart from drowning myself with peppermint tea does anyone know another way to get rid of this gas?

CycleGirl20 · 19/10/2021 07:37

@Redcobra I didn't find a way to get rid of the gas faster, but I did find I slept better with a few pillows so I was sitting up a bit.
