Hysteroscopy advice

Hi ladies, I would really appreciate any advice from anyone who’s had a hysteroscopy please.
We’ve just a round of IVF and had to freeze all due to fluid in the uterus. The fluid seems to be persistent and I have been advised to have a hysteroscopy to look into this. Our clinic unfortunately doesn’t offer this so have to look elsewhere but no idea where to start. Has anyone got any advice about where/who to go to for this (around London)? Was it a whole day case and what was recovery like?
Thanks so much in advance 😊

Hi @Hedwig1 I had a hysteroscopy a few weeks ago for polyp removal before starting IVF. I saw Miss Malik at the Portland hospital, she was really nice and I had it done within a couple of weeks of our initial consultation. It was pretty expensive as a self funder (overall probably about 2700) but I just wanted to get it done quickly so I could move on with fertility treatment. The procedure is pretty quick under general anaesthetic. My op was at 6pm So I went into the hospital at 4pm and I was home by about 9pm. Felt fine afterwards just a night of period like cramping and a couple of days of light bleeding.

Thank you, that’s really helpful. Me too, just want to get it out of the way so we can move forwards. All the best for your next steps

HI @Hedwig1 - I also had one in the summer with Mr Rehan Salim at the Portland too, though BUPA covered my surgery.

I was also on an evening surgery list, under a GA - though didn't go down until later on in the evening (7ish) and therefore didn't get back to my room until gone 9pm, at which point, they recommended that I stay the night as needed to eat drink/ go to the loo etc before they could discharge me anyway and it would be been getting on towards midnight.

I'd recommend wherever you go, take an overnight bag in with you just in case - I just had a rucksack with me with some toiletries/ new top/ underwear / phone charger etc just in case and was v pleased as needed it.

I was in some pain during the night post op and had some pain relief then it was over the counter pain meds for a couple of days afterwards. I had light bleeding for 4 days post surgery and took that time off work to focus on recovery. The anaesthetic can take up to 2 weeks to leave your body completely and I felt quite tired during this time period (this is just how I react to the anaesthetic though, you may be different!)

I then started a FET round about 6 weeks after the surgery (which has been successful!).

Good luck!

I had one to remove a small fibroid on the NHS. Mine was done under local anesthetic. Don't think it requires general - some women do it with just painkillers (although wouldn't recommend this). I cycled back home after mine. It was unpleasant rather super painful. One thing I would recommend is to ask them to use the smallest speculum possible for you as that was the most uncomfortable bit for me. Good luck!

Wow that’s amazing it was under local. You must have a great pain threshold! Thanks for sharing, it’s very reassuring
