Make up etc during ivf treatment

Okay so starting first ever ivf cycle in about 3 weeks and feeling abit clueless!
Reading online about what not to do during treatment and some things say that make up, perfume, lotions etc are best to cut out? Is this right ?

Guidance from my clinic says no jewellery, perfume or make up for either partner as studies show it can effect egg quality

Pumpkinspice77 · 30/10/2020 17:05

Only on the day of egg retrieval when you go to the clinic. Don’t think you need to cut them out of your life!

To be honest I think a lot of these things are scaremongering and not really based on a lot of scientific evidence or if they are then they are very very very small studies. Egg quality needs minimum 3 months to be affected and to be honest more like 12 months.

I did 5 rounds of IVF and am pregnant with twins from the egg collection where I did everything in the run up to it that they said NOT to do. Compared to other cycles where I did everything "right" for months before hand and my egg quality was abysmal

Thanks for the replies.
Yeah I agree sometimes things seem abit ott and when I read about the make up think I thought really! I can't even wear make up either!! I understand on the day of transfer and not wearing anything scented etc but is that because the embryos may be effected on transfer ? I wouldn't have thought they are exposed to the air ? Or is that a dumb question lol this is all so new to me.
Congratulations on your pregnancy! Do you mind if I ask was it a fresh transfer or frozen ?

It's because they want a sterile environment o think - if you have deodorant on and then they touch you to put monitors in etc then they are going to transfer it to their hands

I did a frozen transfer - We were banking embryos over 3 cycles and ironically after 3 months of healthy lifestyles, doing everything right my final egg collection after lockdown in June was rubbish and I didn't have anything to transfer so we thawed and transferred 2 from January which was collected less than a week after new year after weeks of Xmas and new year bingeing 🤣 that's why I don't believe a lot of the "advice" now!

I'm just Gona go in bare on the day, haven't put any gels on my nails in a couple of weeks either so might as well keep it off for now.

It's crazy isn't it! We're told do be so healthy etc but then things like that happen.
We're also doing a frozen transfer with icsi. Dp sperm count was horrendous this time, although last time he had it done around 15 months ago it was well above average, I know things can affect semen anylisis though! One thing that has confused me though is when we went for our initial consultation and had the tests done he was told he had to abstain for 4 days. But now we've been told he has to abstain for the egg collection for 2-3 days only. Does this seem strange? It's made me wonder why the difference tbh!

You can check out which chemicals are not recommended in cosmetics in pregnancy and cut them out. It's mostly chemical spf luckily easily avoidable this time of the year. I wouldn't obsess though as the amount absorbed into blood through skin is not massive. I heard pool water should be avoided too. www.parents.com/pregnancy/complications/health-and-safety-issues/12-cosmetic-ingredients-to-avoid-during-pregnancy/

I personally avoided some chemicals like spf and reduced as much as possible plastic around food and tried to eat organic.

If this makes you more anxious I wouldn't worry but if it gives you a sense of control over the process why not. Good luck!

Thanks for the link. Wow it's amazing how much chemicals there are in everything!
Tbh I only really wear make up and gel nails, I'm quite crap at any other 'beauty' routines otherwise so I'm not gonna worry myself over it!
I start the northisterone Monday, I'm excited to get started now although worrying about the multidose menopur!
