No ovulation worries

After being on the pill for 12 and a half years mainly Dianette and Yasmin, my husband and I wanted to start trying for a family. I am 30 and have healthy weight BMI of 21. I have always struggled with my skin but recently it is the worst I have ever known it to be. I have been off the pill for almost six months and have had one natural period in that time.

My worry is that although following my initial withdrawal period I did get a peak ovulation result, I am now getting negative ovulation results and have been for 5 months.

When I have spoke the prescribing nurse at my doctors after my period had not returned after 3 months she assured me I did not need to worry and things would return in their own time.

I suppose I am beginning worrying as it does not seem like my body is falling back in to a regular cycle and I am not ovulating.

If anyone has any helpful advice on this or guidance about when to seek help I would really appreciate it.

Thank you 😊

@RJ1990 I would go back to the doctors and ask for blood tests. Unfortunately you have to be persistent with them so don't be afraid to go back again

@TTCIVF thank you so much. I’ll contact my GP and hopefully they will run some bloods.

Hi @RJ1990- I was on the pill for 20 years (yikes) and although i got regular periods after coming off it last December I don't think I started ovulating until around May. Once we had been trying for 6 months my GP sent me for blood tests, including a progesterone test which can confirm ovulation. I would definitely push for blood tests. The NHS does like you to be trying for a year if you are under 35 before they look into fertility but I would hope if you don't have regular periods yet and it is worrying you that they should be supportive of this and happy to do some tests.
I read a book recently called 'Period Repair Manual' which i found really interesting. I got it for a pound on my kindle from Amazon. It may be of interest to you. x

Irregular cycles like you describe are often caused by hormonal imbalances and in this respect a condition called polycystic ovaries or its related syndrome PCOS can be to blame. I note too that you were previously prescribed Yasmin and dianette (both pills are known for their anti androgenic qualities). Given that your skin is problematic it may well be that PCOS is the root cause of the irregularity.

I would go back to the GP and have blood tests done. These can be done according to calendar days if there is no real cycle to speak of. Apart from the day 21 test measuring levels of progesterone you also need a day 2 done to compare your luteinising hormone (LH) against that of follicle stimulation hormone (FSH). Normally these two are the same, an imbalance of LH to FSH can indicate hormonal problems like PCO. I would also see if an internal ultrasound scan can be done to see if your ovaries are indeed polycystic. You need a diagnosis first and foremost though and you will need to be persistent in order to get answers.

@Jane1284 @AttilaTheMeerkat thank you so much that’s so helpful. I’m going to speak with my GP in morning. I think my usual tendency of ‘I’ll wait to see how it goes’ is not be best course of action especially under the current circumstances. I imagine everything is taking longer which is understandable.
Thanks again,
B
