Ectopic after IVF

I’m currently in hospital waiting for an emergency laparoscopic salpingectomy following the diagnosis of an ectopic pregnancy after IVF FET. Looking for other people’s experiences - how long did it take you to recover and when were you able to do your next round of IVF? I’ve got a few frozen embryos so would probably plan another FET. Thanks all.

Hi, I’m so sorry you had this outcome ☹️ I had an ectopic after my first fresh transfer. Was offered choice between surgery and methotrexate. Went for methotrexate as they couldn’t definitively find the location of the ectopic. But I was told 3 months to wait to start again regardless of what treatment they went for. I hope surgery goes well and you make a swift recovery. X

Thanks @Lemongrass1 sorry you had this experience too.
I was initially offered methotrexate but my HCG is too high so I’m having to have surgery. I’ve been reading the ectopic trust website and it seems you have to wait 3 months regardless of treatment method.

@bicyclesandbeyond we ended up waiting 4 months in the end as the clinic wanted x3 normal bleeds before starting again. At the time it was frustrating to wait but on the positive side the first FET we did afterwards was successful x

Hi, I have just been discharged from hospital with a suspected ectopic following on from ivf. My story isn't very useful though as it "self-resolved" early on and I can try again after the usual one cycle. I just wanted to say how sorry I am as it truly is a traumatic experience. We are all so unlucky to have this happen. I hope you recover well x

I've had 2 ectopics both ruptured and lost both tubes - one was an IVF transfer baby

I had my last tube removed at the end of the July and then did a cycle of egg collection in the September - PGS testing so was a freeze all and FET in the November. I'd say my stitches took about 6 weeks to completely recover enough for me to be comfortable doing IVF again

Recovery wise 1 night in hospital, i had 3 days sick leave from work, then back to work the following week

I would ask them to remove the tube as close as possible to the uterus - ie don't leave a stump behind as you can still have an ectopic in that following IVF

Also they often ask what you would like to be done with the baby - just to prepare you - we were net expecting the questions the first time and it was very upsetting. We opted for the hospital to arrange a funeral service and it was lovely. I would recommend agreeing to something like that as it was good closure for us and means we have somewhere to go to visit (the ashes are spread on the cemetarys baby memorial garden)

Congratulations @Lemongrass1 that fills me with some hope! Thanks for sharing your experience.

I’m so sorry to hear your story @ivfdreaming although I’ve seen you pop up on other threads and I know it ends well with your twin pregnancy - great to hear positive stories after what has literally been the worst day of my life! I can’t believe you went back to work so soon, I’m full of admiration. You have been through a lot! Xx

@bicyclesandbeyond

Thankyou - yes I'm 14 weeks with twins. The transfer was almost a year to the day of my second ectopic

That was my 7th loss so I knew my strengths and limitations by that point. For me I need to be in a routine and back around people as quickly as possible. Being at home on my own wouldn't have done my mental health any favours and to heal I needed to be back to "normal" or new normal I suppose.

I hope you're operation goes well. I know it is scary but hopefully you're not in too much pain xx

bicyclesandbeyond · 28/08/2020 22:30

Thanks @ivfdreaming, this was my 1st cycle. I can’t even imagine what 7 losses feels like. Just awful. I wish you a really healthy pregnancy and a wonderful future with your twins.
Just on my way home now. I’m in quite a bit of pain but have some dihydrocodeine to get me through! I’m just so grateful to be safe now and for our amazing NHS. Xx
