Hi all. Unfortunately I’ve been through 4 miscarriages. My last two were caused by hematomas that were too large they dislodged my baby from uterus wall. My clinic are frustrating me so been doing some research myself and found clexane can help with blood clots. I’ve had test for RPL abc they came back normal. My question has anyone been prescribed clexane without having any abnormalities??

I've been on clexane for all 4 of my transfers as a precautionary measure - in one of the early scans they measured the blood pressure to one ovary and it was a bit high also I'd previously had suspected lupus although tested negative for the last few years and there was also someone in my Immediate family who had had a blood clot

Out of 4 IVF transfers - 2 were BFN, 1 was BFP but ended in ectopic and the 4th transfer was successful and I'm 14 weeks with twins - I stopped clexane at 12 weeks but have been told I'll have to go back on them at 28 weeks

I think clexane helps more with blood clots that can travel through the placenta rather than one that grows outside the uterus or sac - I thought blood thinning injections can actually make hematomas worse rather than prevent them? And believe you have to stop them if you have any kind of bleeding?

I really don’t know. I’m just trying to explore all options. Hematomas are caused due to blood clots behind the placenta. So I’m assuming if it’s a blood clot then clexane can prevent blood clots? I’m at a lost cause because the exact same thing has happened twice before and now my clinic don’t want to change my protocol. Did you get prescribed clexane without any blood clotting issues?

Hi @Babygivf - are you paying for treatment or is it NHS? Do you pay for your meds? I think clexane is expensive so may not be covered in some packages.

I am NHS and I take fragmin which is basically the same thing, but I have a strong family history of clotting disorders so this was on the recommendation of the NHS hematology department. My IVF clinic referred me there before starting treatment. I have to inject myself daily from stims to 6 weeks post birth, with a break for anything that might involve surgery.

I don't know much about haematomas but it does look like sticky blood could be an issue, in which case the heparin could help.

What clinic are you with? Are you doing IVF or natural? I would push them to discuss this - maybe they don't have much experience in this area and you need expert help from somewhere else.

Thanks for getting in touch. I’m in the not east England. I’ve currently got 1 FET left. I’m enquiring about a ES scratch, Asprin and clexane (or similar) I’m actually NHS funded but wouldn’t mind paying for extra for anything that I need. My GP is testing em for thrombophilia Due to a family history of blood clots. I will literally do any TV I BFF to not go through this heartache again and have my baby

Okay - my thrombophilia results all came back normal, but the hematologist put me on a prophylactic dose of heparin based on family history alone and my age of 40 (we have confirmed antithrombin iii deficiency in our family, although I came up negative). I have a large family and most of my mothers family have had clots and some of my cousins, and there have been quite a few miscarriages.

I would 100% want heparin in my next FET cycle if I were you. I hope you get somewhere with your GP and clinic.

Thank you I will definitely demand it. How about Asprin?

Yeah my sister took aspirin throughout stims and then from week 12. It's something I will ask about when I'm next in as no one has mentioned it to me.

I was on clexane without any history of clotting issues. It was fairly standard in my clinic; I'm in Ireland.

I was on it for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. It hurt a bit and caused terrible bruising and had to be taken at exactly the same time every day but doesn't have to be refrigerated so travels well.

Babygivf · 28/08/2020 21:00

Thank you for taking the time to post. Did it work for you? I’ve been looking at Endo scratch, Asprin and clexane (or alternatives). Asking these questions at my next appointment

It worked in that I had a successful pregnancy and now have dc but I can't say that that wouldn't have happened anyway.

I did feel more reassured about potential miscarriage by using it (I don't have a history of miscarriage; that IVF cycle was the first time I was ever pregnant) and when I told my hospital consultant at my 12 week appointment that I was using it, he thought it was a good idea.

At the time I was nervous about coming off the clexane cold turkey and he told me I could reduce down the dosage (to make myself feel better rather than clinical need) so in the end I think I kept taking it until 16-17 weeks, going from every day to every second day, to 3 times a week etc.

I had an emergency c-section with dc and was prescribed it again for about a week after the section.

I think its definitely worth asking for it considering your history of miscarriage and, as my clinic prescribed it as standard, presumably there are no issues with taking it even with no medical history.

I don't know how much it costs because it was covered under the maximum monthly prescription charge that we have in Ireland.

Thank you for this information. It’s only my lost to ask when I go back to the clinic. Really appreciate it
