Worried by FSH test result - can anyone advise?

Any TTC blood test veterans out there? Please help!

Had my day 3 (actually day 2) blood results back and my FSH level is 15.9, which the accompanying comment described as "slightly raised".

I've read that between 2 and 10 is ideal, while high is over 20 - but over 15 can be a negative sign for fertility and also treatment, due to possible ovarian reserve issues.

As mine is described as only "slightly" raised - and appears to be borderline - I don't know how concerned I should be.

I have a GP apt booked next week to discuss the results, but in the meantime it'd be VERY helpful to hear others' thoughts/experiences!

My day 21 results were completely normal. LH also appears to be normal. I have reasonably regular cycles, with apparent ovulation.

I'm 38 and had my first child nearly three years ago (conceived immediately).

I'm also looking into booking a private appointment to get a 'fertility MOT' to test AMH, do scans, etc.

But this FSH test has got me really worried that it's game over and may all be pointless 😢

AMH and antral follicle counts (AFC) are supposed to be far better indicators of fertility. I think FSH was the original test and not seen as reliable anymore, think it can fluctuate too. I think it’s meant to give an indicator as to how hard your ovaries have to work to produce a mature egg each month?? I know it’s so hard but try not to worry and look into AMH/AFC instead. Good luck! X

Hello. I had a result of 12 a few months ago that prompted me to have AMH and AFC privately. FSH being on the high side indicates that the body has to work harder to stimulate ovulation. So it can correlate with a lower egg reserve (mine did though not ‘game over’ numbers).
I’ve heard it can fluctuate a lot also.
I hope your GP can give you some more information. Maybe look into the other tests you could do privately to give you a full overview - FSH is only part of the picture I believe.
Good luck!!

Should add - I conceived quickly with my now (just) 2 year old. So it’s completely taken me by surprise too!
I honestly doubt it would be game over, but may be a more difficult path/take longer.

Thanks both :)

@Kitte321 - What was the outcome of your private tests?

We've made an appointment for tests at a local private clinic in September. Then can discuss treatment options.

Well my AMH is low at 6.3. AFC is ‘ok’ at 12. So for me the FSH was indicative of DOR.
How long have you been trying?
I’m day 2 of month 12. If we don’t conceive naturally this month we will be moving on to IVF (which the consultant recommended we do).

@Kitte321 - Good luck with this month! Thanks for sharing your experience.

We've been trying on-and-off since the start of the year - but I'm 38, so we don't want to waste any time.

Wonder whether the private place might suggest IUI or medication before full-on IVF.

Quick update to this thread - I was surprised to have natural success, despite my test results (got pregnant a few months after).
