Hi, we are ttc and have had a miscarriage and potential luteal phase issues so my consultant is trying us on progesterone supplements this month.

I ovulated today and there's not much instruction other than take twice a day......

Do I start taking tomorrow at 1dpo and continue untill 14dpo? Or do I continue untill i start to bleed OR will I not bleed untill I stop taking them?

Thanks in advance:D

I think you must continue to take them until pregnant and probably for a number of weeks into the pregnancy.

I have been on these and was told to take them until Week 10-12 of pregnancy.

Annny27 · 02/08/2020 13:46

Thanks @UncleBrynsfishingtrip :)

I badly worded my first message - what I meant to say is, if I am not pregnant, the consultant has told me only to take it from ovulation to period but wondering whether I would need to stop taking them on order to get a period or whether my period would come and then I stop taking them:)

I had a period on them x

Pinktruffle · 02/08/2020 16:53

You can bleed whilst using them. I was using them for the first 12 weeks of my pregnancy and had 2 bleeds, baby was fine thank God

Just a word to the wise, they are a little messy once they melt so try to lie down for 20/30 minutes after inserting it and wear old pants (once you dont mind getting ruined). Panty liners are also your friend.

ivfdreaming · 02/08/2020 16:56

You can bleed whilst on them but most women find it can delay their period so better to come off them

VenusStarr · 02/08/2020 19:07

Hi @Annny27, I've also been prescribed them - I'm to take 200mg x2 from 7dpo.if I test positive on 14dpo, I up to 400mg x2. No luck last cycle, we're giving it one more go before we start IVF 🤞

I stopped last cycle on the Friday and started my period on the Monday.

Good luck x

Annny27 · 02/08/2020 19:43

Thanks everyone:)

@VenusStarr sorry to see you are still around on the ttc forums too! Thats promising that IVF is not too far away but fingers crossed that this cycle sticks!

Thanks @Annny27, well over 2.5 years now 😔 but hoping that either the progesterone helps or we can move onto ivf - hoping to hear from my clinic this week 🙏

Hope the progesterone helps you x

JustOneMoreStep · 02/08/2020 22:41

The advice I recieved was to begin taking them the day after ovulation and to continue them twice daily until 16dpo or the 1st day of period whichever is soonest and POAS. If BFP continue using until 12weeks. If BFN stop immediately and repeat the cycle. For many women the progesterone will delay your period but not everyone and its important to stop the progesterone immediately if AF arrives as you don't want it to interfere with the new cycle. Just be mindful that spotting can occur as implantation bleed in which case continue with progesterone.

Annny27 · 03/08/2020 11:32

Thank you @JustOneMoreStep yes I have heard they are messy haha! Few people have said for me to use them rectally and not vaginally

@VenusStarr its a long horrible journey but will hopefully be worth it in the end 💗

@VenusStarr I think I recognise your name from a board a couple of years ago, sorry to see you're still here. I'm just in the throes of another miscarriage, absolutely awful.

I just wondered how you went about getting the progesterone prescribed? this is the third miscarriage in as many years. I know that my mum had pr. injections due to multiple early miscarriages and I'm wondering if the same problem is happening to me.

As the first miscarriage happened at five weeks, it wasn't recorded by anyone (other than me) so I am worried that they won't send me for related tests. We have started the ivf process with Leeds fertility and I have rung to tell them (pregnancy was non ivf) but we are just stuck on a waiting list at the moment because of COVID. Feel so hopeless. 😞

All the while time marches on and I am 40 at the end of this year.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 03/08/2020 16:19

@Annny27 commiserations, I have a short luteal phase also- I often ovulate day 16-18 and generally have a 27 day cycle. I found that acupuncture did help somewhat and certainly helped with my anxiety around conceiving.

VenusStarr · 03/08/2020 16:42

Hi @NotMaryWhitehouse I'm so sorry about your losses ❤️ I had private nk cells testing at Coventry after all my initial recurrent tests came back normal, so no clotting or immune issues (that they test for).

I had the nk cells biopsy which was also normal and so the professor prescribed the cyclogest - he said that my 2 MMCs were likely to be related to uterine environment - never seen a heartbeat, babies stopped growing around 5.5/6 weeks but miscarried around 9. I had one early / chemical this year too.

I had to fight my GP to fulfil the prescription, but it's worth speaking to your GP. I sent them the Tommy's Prism research paper which says for recurrent losses, progesterone can help. If I'd seen the other GP in my practice, I don't think I'd have had an issue. Worse case I'd have got them on a private prescription if needed.

I'm sorry you're stuck on the waiting list, we've had a faff with ours, but are now under Create but with our nhs funding for one cycle. I'm actually due to start in the next few weeks. Am hoping that them having a good looks at our eggs, sperm and embryos they might be able to identify where our issues might lie.

Have you had recurrent mc tests? It's worth it to rule things out, but again I know there's a long wait, but you might be able to get a cancellation xx

NotMaryWhitehouse · 03/08/2020 16:56

@VenusStarr that's so helpful, thank you for such a detailed reply. I haven't had recurrent miscarriage testing, no. I have a nasty suspicion that Leeds fertility and my GPs will both tell me that the other is responsible. I shall have to be my own best advocate I think and be pushy. I think I will look into pay my for some private testing too. My husband gets free medical through his work which covers me too so I will see if this might be something they offer. I do feel lucky that we are in a position to be able to afford it, although IVF will be a real financial burden, if it comes to it.

I will really be crossing all fingers and toes for you, hopefully this will be it for you and I will look forward to hearing it has been successful.

VenusStarr · 03/08/2020 17:06

Thank you @NotMaryWhitehouse. My fertility consultant referred us to the recurrent mc clinic, but I was already under his care doing the fertility investigations, I don't think the GP would've done it to be honest.

Being your own advocate is the best advice I have, I have definitely felt like I must be annoying people when I call numerous times, but it's definitely helped me feel more in control and I also got us earlier appointments a couple of times due to cancellations.

The private testing at Coventry was about £550 so nothing compared to ivf in that sense, but helped rule out certain things. We still don't have answers for our losses but I'm still hopeful we'll get there one day. I've got the same hope for you and @Annny27 too ❤️

NotMaryWhitehouse · 03/08/2020 17:40

@VenusStarr ✊🏻 ❤️

KatBeCool · 04/08/2020 06:56

@Annny27 they say to take it until 14 DPO and stop if bfn, AF usually arrives within 2-3 days. Interestingly, the suppositories didn't work well for me and my progesterone was really low when they tested. So I'm going to stick with oral progesterone. Plus the suppositories are so disgustingly messy, a pad is a must, and don't make any jerk moves 😂

Annny27 · 06/08/2020 10:16

Thanks ladies :) only been taking them for a day and already feel the boobs getting heavier! So definitley having an impact!
